Considering the amount of Hl2 naysayers that seem to appear here once in a while trying to convince everyone that some other game is better, I thought it'd be cool to put up a thread about why we look forward to HL2 more than most other games.

1. Storytelling: probably the biggest step forward in storytelling since HL1. A game based on the experience of doing HL1 and with far more ambitious storytelling. What Valve seem most excited about is their new story and SP in the interviews. And Marc Laidlaw is cool. http://www.planethalflife.com/features/interviews/laidlaw/
read.
2. Physics: a simulated more believable world with endless amount of cool puzzles and gameplay.
3. AI: Badguys that are intelligent and make fighting more fun/exciting.
4. Mods: I'm going to be trying to make my own mod and I've already seen some great looking stuff from others. People can start making more design decisions instead of technical ones.
5. Great art design. I still think it's the best looking of all the games coming out because there's more to a game than rendering polygons and stuff. Eastern European architecture, colourful environments, awesome looking badguys (fortress, combine uniform, strider), realistic models and animation.
6. Great gameplay design. The guns seen so far are already good, HL1 guns were good. Inventive and original badguys to fight (manhacks, strider, hydra). 'Feel' for the game will be physically simulated and movement at same speed as HL1. Interactive characters that will be able to act. Making the player feel like he/she is Gordon.
7. Longevity: it'll be hugely popular and multiplayer + mods will be played for a long time to come.

I know there's more but this is getting a little long. :dork:

Alyx... thats it... oh yea and the "physics". *wink *wink*

LOL. I guess im looking forward to the facial animations and the eyes the most, since thats really the only thing that sets it apart from other upcoming games.

Everything you listed is also present in a handfull of other upcoming games, including stalker and the dreaded Doom3(GASP! i said it!)

I look forward to them all. Ill let the rest of you fuss over which one "owns", and ill be enjoying them in the meantime.

We should all be thankfull of the veriety of choice we are blessed with.

I'd agree with you except for the fact that I HATE you.

Go and die... I mean fly. I said fly... Really.

Well said. If a game is good, I'll play it regardless of who made it, what engine it uses, what features are implemented in the rendering pipe, etc.

Biggest thing that I'm having a problem with in regards to Half-Life is which version to buy. I don't normally play multi-player, but I do start up a game once in a while to see what the fuss is about. With Half-Life 2, am I going to have to spend an additional $20 or get a subscription for this luxury?

The question isn't why hl2, its why not hl2?

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to put innovative in front of pretty much everything on the list... silly me (even devastation had physics right).

New games comming out are always saying how there AI is better than the others, advanced this, new that, better pathfinding here, will support team mates there etc........but this time I really believe them.
