Why I believe Half-Life 2 won't be delayed (by much if it is at all)

I doubt that... the movies weren't (except the first one), but there would be more, demand...

certainly would be more demand, but if you have to preorder via steam in order to get the data then i dont think it will be a big problem.

/me passes teh Zong!

Some people are telling that HL2 will be released by steam 30th September but they are saying that it hit the shelves a couple of weeks later...

Could that be true? Gabe said they need to fix some minor things but Publishing (burning / boxing and marketing) could spend some weeks...

So HL2 will be in store later then 30th september ?

Correct...he said that they cannot control the retail dates...for that is the job of the publisher (Vivendi). My guess is the US will be priority number one for distribution, so most likely retail outlets there will get it on the 30th or very soon after. Europe may receive it later, probably no later than a couple weeks. My 2 cents

I was about to say that too, Spit, but then there's also the firm statements it will be simultaneous. Biz thing probably - they'd probably delay it on steam to catch up with distribution :(

No. On shelves on the 30th. It sounds like Valve has no control over the shelf release dates for the UK and Europe (and guessing the rest of the world outside the US). From what I can gather (uh), they are aiming for the 30th as the U.S. shelf release date.

They are also offering it via Steam on the 30th. That's the plan. Apparently, there is also the plan to send the game via Steam BEFORE then...but that it would be locked until the 30th. The newest date conjectured for this and an announcement of some kind is Tuesday, the 22nd. But that seems like total guesswork - educated guesswork, but still just guesses.

Crossed fingers.

Hey spit. You've become a star pretty quickly :) there are a couple of mentions of you on my site! That one little bit, i assume you're referring to Maximus0402's e-mail from Gabe in the thread titled something along the lines of "Proof that HL2 is almost done!".

That was a fake, unfortunately.

Oh it was? Bummer. Oh well, I'm still confident that they're almost done.

I also think this the plan for valve, based on the things Gabe has said in emails and interviews. But we can never be sure.

Arent the guys at valve going to be pissed off with you now that you have spilled the beans regarding steam and the pre order dl of HL2 to our HD a week before release?

Ha, does anyone else get the impression that when Valve announces it's gone gold Spitcodfry is going to say

"Yeah that's fits in with the sign saying "GOLD DATE" when I visited Valve."

This news is interesting. My guess is that you can buy Half-LIfe 2 a week before it comes out but you'll only be able to play it on the release day.

Hmm, You know what. There are going to be so many people saying "Half-Life 2 is not released on Steam, it's delayed." and stuff.

Well I think Gabe knew I'd say everything, cause he knew I was representing HL2.net, and I didn't have to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement, or anything. There wasn't one point in the tour when he said something alone the lines of "Let's keep this between us, okay?"

Well that just goes to show that weed has fried my short term memory...I didn't even notice the headcrab hanging from the ceiling in the foyer, which Fragmaster told me about.

I really believe HALF LIFE 2 will be announced GOLD a day after it's released. 9-29th.

Now Valve may announce the fact that HL2 will be available during 9/30 through steam. But they will not announce it's GOLD status until this 29th.

In my opinion--Valve wants STEAM to be sucessful. And to garner more customers with STEAM--they'll need a stratagem to make the flock use it, rather than go buy it out on the retail store. And by not announcing the date a day before it's release through the retailers--is a solution that would rectify that matter at hand--for the masses would believe it's going in STEAM before out in the stores, you see.

Of course, that's just my cent in the bill.

Wait..I pre-ordered it @ EB and I want HL-2 the day it comes out, and suppose it comes out on Steam the first day .. what am I supposed to do? (im sure this has been discussed before, i am new...)

Wow...I think that's the best hypothesis to this whole debacle I've heard yet. Totally makes sense. After all, Valve is really putting a ton of their own money on the line with Steam---it's their baby---and they want it to grow up to be big and strong.

I paid my game in full at EB and have thought about this same thing...if it comes out on Steam first I might go get my pre-order money (I called EB today and the guy said I could get it back) and put it away for a month while I use Steam to play it. Then after that month I'll cancel my subscription and go buy the retail copy.

Ahh ok, and what's the monthly subscription fee total come to..? (for Steam)

hey spit, you've become quite a hot commodoty on these forums! You're the biggest thing from the time of me, guinny and EVIL! crazy! :D

Well, hmm ... what's the sense in getting your pre-order money back if you're going to end up spending that same amount of money on the same product one month later? Looks like I'll hit Steam for a month (9.95 is reasonable) and still keep that preorder @ EB intact and just get it a month later...

I thought that if you didn't claim pre-orders within 48 hours of the product arriving then it was given away...wouldn't make much sense if you paid for all of it, though.

Thanks for the kind words :)

Oh heh I paid the 49.95 (hopefully that's the price the normal boxed version will come out to) and I'll be keeping that there ... and hopefully I won't even have to resort to Steam for the first month if Gabe holds that release date @ 9/30.. :)

Hmm... ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 128 mb or something of that sort..Not exactly sure
I'll be playing it with my Radeon 9800 Pro 128 mb :) I bought the damn card for this game so it better be good (seems inevitable at this point)
