Not a fanboy complaint but I am curious. Why is everyone going nuts over the 6800? Is the x800 series a bad line? Whats so wrong with going with an x800?
i dont know, people in this forums tended to favor ati more, i dont konw what u mean. they kept on posting reveiws of how the x800xt beat the 6800 cards.
I havent seen much complaining about the ati cards. I prefer ati just because they do have better quality. Nvidia does have a good card but they really cant compete as good as ati does. ati is going 2 get a shut down once the alienware video card comes out though because for you guys who have seen it will know that that card is a god for the gaming world.
::jokes::
I would just take an x800 XT and a 6800 Ultra and duct tape them together that way I have the best of both worlds.
::serious::
never really worried much about what others are doing, just kinda sitting back and watching what happens.
Besides, don't cards like this just get owned by newer ones right after you buy one?
What they really should do, is make a 3rd company, called ATvidia or something, where they take the best features of each card and combine em. Or just duct tape them together :cheers:
I wouldnt say they are going nuts over the 6800 but it is a return to form for nvidia. Thier previous FX line of cards gave nvidia a terrible reputation for poor AA and AF quality compared to the ATI 9700 and 9800 series and to top that it wasnt even close to bieng as fast as its ATI counterpart. The image quality on the 6800 card however is vastly improved over thier previous line of cards and is almost indistinguishable from ATI's x800 series.
The 6800 ultra has its shortcomings however. Despite having more features than the X800XT PE its the slower card out of the two in most games although not by much. Its huge fan is a huge monster that steals the space of the PCI slot below the AGP card which the XT PE doesnt do and the 6800u requires two molex connectors over the XT PE's required one connector.
Having said that nvidia has produced a card that slightly edges out over its competitor. From the reviews ive seen the 6800GT is slightly faster than the x800 pro although not by much. Looking at all the UK sites that are selling the 6800GT and x800 pro cards the cheapest 6800GT is some £30 cheaper than the cheapest x800pro. so they are more or less direct competitors. What makes the 6800GT even more impressive is that its a single slot, single molex connector version of the 6800 ultra. It has the ultra's full 16 pipelines. The only difference between the ultra and GT is that the GT is clocked at 350MHz core 1000MHz mem over the ultra's 400MHz core 1100MHz mem and from what ive read on tech forums nearly every single retail 6800GT is able to clock to 6800u speeds.
To turn an x800 pro into an XT PE however is harder as the x800 pro has only 12 pipelines compared to the XT PE's 16 so not only do you have to overclock but you have to mod the board also. It seems that people tend to have limited success at modding pro boards to XT PE boards and for some reason the ATI cards dont overclock quite as well as the new nvidia ones.
At the end of the day its a close run thing. If you're made of money then go for the ATI XT PE as in my opinion its the best card. If you're thinking of buying an x800 pro then I seriously suggest you check out the 6800GT beforehand. I'm currently in the market for a new vid card. If i can get my XT PE for cheap then thats the card im buying but if not i will be sticking a 6800GT in this box. :E
I got myself a 6800GT and I love it. Not a fanboi or anything been using both cards back and forth. Main reason im getting the 6800GT is
A) It's affordable. You can already OC it pass the 6800 ULTRA specs
This is what is already making it "the" card for mid-range, "budget" gamers who want the best bang for their buck.
B) It's new technology. The X800 is just the same core as the 9800 series with faster clocks. It doesn't even have Pixel Shader 3.0 support like the 6800 will.
C) I play mostly OpenGL games... Like CZ, CoD, etc.
Therefore, I want a card that will keep me "happy" with the rendering mode that I use most.
It all comes down to what YOU want and what YOU need your card to do.
Also, people that play older games dont really need these cards. A 9800 Series or 5900 Series will be fast enough for your needs.
D) $301 for a 6800GT is hell of a nice deal
BTW. I seen more ppl side w/ATI on this forum and practically every forum I go to.
The 6800 has seen a spot of renewed interest due to the near release of Doom 3, although from what ive seen from PC Gamer even Nvidias preference for openGL games has only given the 6800 a 10 fps advantage on average over its equivalent x800 rival.
Reading from different places it seems ATi might release a x800GT which would have 16 pipes but a slower clock/mem, this card would be the same price as the 6800GT and the x800Pro would be reduced in price.
