Why is it illegal to put money in other people's parking meters?
I put a quarter in someone's almost expiring parking meter the other day a few yards away from an officer and they said i shouldn't be doing it.. why? aren't I helping the person not get a ticket by giving them my own money?

I've allways wondered this. And yeah, I do believe it is actually illegal Farrow :)

It's so simple!

Because the amount of money the city makes off of writing up a ticket and getting people to pay fines is more than they get off the quarter. It's always about the money!

...Actually I don't really know :P

dfc is right.

You lot got any idea how much london for example makes off parking tickets? Its well over million a year. Well over.

My housemate got a parking fine, she bought the ticket, infact bought an hour more than she needed to incase the lecture overran. She got a fine because the ticket was displayed upsidedown by mistake (they arent the sticky ones). Bummer.

In london, iirc, traffic wardens got commision on the number of fines they dish out. The number of fines given out went up 300% or so. It's rediculous. I dont agree with parking fee's, if you are parked safely and arent there for months, there's nothing wrong with it. Afterall, we pay road tax.

yes, she gave me a warning after dropping a few more dimes in other people's parking meters... stupid police.

it's incredibly stupid. where I live, there was somone arrested, given a large fine or whatever, for going around and putting money in peoples parking meters. It's stupid.

Plus, there was a person who made a sign saying to slow down because there was a speed trap down the street. They also got arrested.

Both cases, it's like 'interfering with police business' or something, it's rediculous. Never mind that all you are doing is making sure other people don't break the law (whether parking or speeding), they just wanna bust people.

I remember there was this big case of this clown who called himself Ronald McDonald (but he wasn't the real Ronald.) getting sued by a city because he was a constant offender of this. One of the people who he helped put a quarter I believe turned out to be a lawyer and helped defend him and people started sending him money.

;) It is also illegal if it is raining in the afternoon, when you have your windshield wipes on, you MUST have your headlights on. In the afternoon people, what the freak!?(California Law)

Maybe it makes you help them commit a crime or something?

May God bless this symbolic man, who wears the divine costume.

;) Or maybe it's like, you're spending your own money for that meter, but the person parked there is using your meter you paid for. In other words like saying you put the money in for your own sake, but this person there is practically using YOUR money. Like stealing from you.

Or would if a person would get offended by the fact someone else is paying for them?

There's no actual crime being commited, though? I'd at least ask what the crime was, because they really can't say that it's costing them precious fine money straight to your face. If they can't come up with an actual law that's being broken, just carry on.

I dont believe the police sometimes.

What would they do if the person was there but didnt have any money and you leant them some? Is that illegal? They might as well ban being nice to people.

Its the same reason I get annoyed at the number of speed traps there are. Are the police actively giving up catching 'real' criminals.

Like I said before. A person may have been putting money in a meter, but who said they put it in for the car already parked there? How do we know that person has giving sincere intentions? It's different about giving money in this type of situation.

This law makes sense. Stuff can be hard to see if it's raining, and without headlights and during heavy downpour, other drivers can't see you.

Sorry, but I don't understand. Could you rephrase that? How could someone be putting money in someone else's meter insincerely?

But why the afternoon? Why not morning too?

that's ridiculous. No way should it be illegal to pay for someone's parking meter. It's akin to handing someone an extra dime at a gas station paying for a soda. It's your money, you can do with it the f*ck you want. They shouldn't be able to say otherwise. I'm getting angry now thinking about it.

They might be putting the money there maliciously in order to prevent the city from making a profit from the fine the poor bastard would have gotten if you hadn't stuck your quarter in the goddamn parking meter!

Also, how does the cop know it is not your car, or if you were just sent there by the person responsible for that car?

To the original poster:
Cops have better things to do. Are you sure the person who gave those orders was not a contract meter maid? Those have no jurisdiction whatsoever. Next time tell her to go **** herself.

"Sorry officer, the coin slipped out of my hand" :)

I was in the pool, god dammit! I was in the pool!!!!
