It's illegal because if you watch the news or read the paper, a lot of the "sex trade workers" some people call them, end up dead. That's why it's illegal...also HIV, AIDS, and other diseases. It's not safe.

well where i live the cops dont seem to arrest the prostitutes, they only arrest & charge the people who use them. Which i fink is wrong. The British goverment is feckered.

So why don't the prostitues get arrested, i watch this police things on TV every so often & its based in a area near to me, and they watch a waman get into a mans car, they go over arrest the man. & talk to the womaN FOR ABOUT 5MINS, MAYBE LESS THEN JUST SSEND HER ON HER WAY, AND TELL HER TO BECAREFUL. Its bloody stupid. The prostitues are provoking this, yet the cops dont do owt to get them off the street.

It's actually the man's fault. He gave in...and arresting the women won't help..as soon as the police let them go, the women will start again.

Selling sex is not illegal in the UK. The problem is when you make such arrangements or advertise it in public. i.e. a prostitute on a street corner is illegal whereas advertising your services in a porno mag or some other kind of "adult" classified ads is ok.

well actually the quite opposite of what you said. If porstitution was legal it would reduce the spread of std's to almost none, and their would hardly ever be any killings. If prostitution was legal their would be regulations to the industry and laws they still have to abide by. Like take a look at las vegas where it is legal if you have a license to prostitute. All of their porstitutes are checked regularly for diseases and, although i dont know for sure, im pretty sure they probably have almost no deaths of prostitutes due to murder or std's. So actually prostitution being legal would make perfect sense, and it would pull in LOTS of money too.

Well, as near as I can tell, STI's is the perferred variation of STD in Europe. It stands for Sexually Transmitted Infections. So really, it's the same thing.

Legalizing prostitution would allow for government regulations, etc. And would certainly allow for more safety in general on the part of both sex trade workers, and those that hire them.

It's rather similar to the reasoning behind legalizing marijuana, in that it would be safer for those who use it. (Though it'd probably be more expensive)

In both cases, the government could tax it, and accountability and supervision are introduced into the industry.

It's because they can catch more people commiting crimes that way. If you think about, they're effectively using the whores as bait for those men, and they know that trying to catch the prostitutes completely will never work. It's just more effective to get the people after them, so the industry collapses.

If it was legal, then the possibility of this happening is greatly reduced. As is the possibility of them being beaten up (or worse) by clients or pimps, the possibility of them getting addicted to drugs forcibly by their pimps etc.
In short, legaslising it takes away most of the undesirable problems people have with porostitution (unless you're talking about the morality of it all)

One major problem is that you have to wonder WHY people go into prostitution in the first place. It's not, I imagine, most people's first career choice, so do they go into it because they want to or because they feel they have to? And if it's the;atter, then can the state be seen to be approving of this?
Besides, most countries are, on the whole, too prudish to legalise it (imagine the uproar from the Daily Mail readiers!)

just because you do it for free, get married, or do it consentually doesn't mean you WON'T get aids, hiv, or any other STDs. Also, you could die in a car wreck while driving to the girl/guy's house... so you'd be dead..

Building on El Chi's comment: Prostitution is very, very often the last ditch career choice. It requires relatively no skills, and can be practiced anywhere. Cops not arresting prostitutes isn't bad, rather its usually an act of sympathy on the part of the police. They're aware these women don't really have anywhere else to go.
That said, I believe the situation in Nevada is that street-corner style prostitution is still as illegal as everywhere else, but there are licensed brothels where everything can be regulated and monitored for the safety of all involved.
