Why no US exclusive?

Hmm, easy to say that when you'll be playing it a week in advance while drinking that sweet Kentucky Bourbon, Innervision.

Damn you!

i've checked all the regular mags here...pcgamer, maximumPC, computer gaming monthly...and none seem to care about HL@, at least yet. They are still printing articles on Doom3!

Could it be possible that when the latest issue went to print, they didn't yet know that they would get the chance to review Half-Life 2. So there are no announcements of a HL2 review in the current issues. Instead we'll see a flood of massive pictures of Gordon in the covers of the next issues.

still, despite the mystery surrounded the release and the US mag's silence concerning HL2 reviews, i quite like the fact that a Belgian mag is getting a world exclusive.....seems to concur with the whole idea of a worldwide release...

oh and Feath, PCG (uk) announced HL2 first, and they're the ones who'll get the exclusive...though to be honest i'd prefer PCZ....the recent overhaul of the former mag has seemed too....overstated....echoing their recent reviews....

the thing is, both of the mag's seem always to agree on the medium-high % of games, its only the 'A+' titles that seem to agitate the most opinion...which i suppose is to be expected...it just always seems hard to trust in a mags consistancy...

seppo - you're right, but the same can be said for the PCZ (uk) edition, and upon the chance of the HL2 review, moved their issue date forward by over a week so they be appear the same time as another mag's 'exclusive'....why has this not happened over there?

PC Zone annouced that they had the review at Tue Sep 21 10:37 AM
PC Gamer UK annouced that they had a review at Wed Sep 22, 2004 10:36 am (23 hours and 59 minutes later).

But anyway, PC Gamer UK doesn't really have an exclusive because they all reviewed it at the same time (Valve invited them over, there's evidence for that but I can't be bothered to find it). PC Gamer just happens to come out 3 days earlier.

Because Valve invited people over to play the game, it would be really weird if they didn't invite US mags over. I'd Expect the same magazines that got the previews in April to have the review.

EDIT: Here's the evidence that Valve invited magazines round to play Half-Life 2:

The preview page says that the reviewer went away and played it.

OPENING THE VALVE... that unleashes Half-Life 2. Jim went, he played, and came back a gibbering, teary-eyed wreck. The best game of all time? Finid out here.

And the guy who reviewed it was away for a week earlier this month.

Sunshine is really very distracting.

Just a quick update before I plunge back into a load of writing. I'm away for a week, so no updates until at least next sunday. I know, but it's going to be worth the wait, I think. Don't be too sad while I'm gone.

Well, I'm back. Lots of events. Had an adventure. Will talk about it all at some later date. In the meantime, I have much work to do.

I've been thinking that maybe Valve were originally planning for an early October release, and the magazines signed the already famous NDA, which would last till October 5th, or 3th, whatever. That way the reviews would hit stores just before the release of Half-Life 2. But then Vivendi came up with all the "we hate Steam blah blah" stuff, possibly causing a month long delay. What do you think?

I posted this in another thread when I got my latest issue of pc gamer they may not even be talking about HL2 but it kinda sounds like they are indirectly refering to HL2 this is the november issue talking about nexts months issue..
"blah blah blah ....Rome total war blah blah. And if we should have another barn-burning exclusive announcement....well, dont be too shocked. See ya!"

Who is that guy? Is he from PC Gamer or PC Zone?

Hmm..."The best game of all time? Find it out here." and "It's incredible"... Sounds promising.

I was thinking that was strange too...

Maybe Americans have forgotten how to read since Dubyah directed all the country's resources away from education etc and into chasing shadows and as such a review would be pointless.

OR maybe they have reviews and just aren't saying anything yet?
Heres a big **** YOU just for you.

Did JimmyPage edit his post?

Because if he did then report him. The moderators can see what and if he edited. ;)

Seriously, lay off the anti-americanism, this isn't even the right forum for having even any intelligent discussions about world politics.

Why would I have edited it? It was a joke which someone took a bit too seriously, the post should look exactly as it did when it was made.

If he'd bothered his arse to read my next post he would have seen me write 'Im only messing you guys are alright' or something along those lines.

And Im not anti-american, just anti-Bush. if there's going to be a ban on jokes related to that then your American members should also be banned from making jokes about, say, the French - and there have been a few.

Neither should happen though cos in the end the only people who would get seriously worked up about that kind of crap shouldn't be allowed into normal society.

Whether you like it or not, even joking about any currently debated nations on any popular forum will be enough to start up a very large, very unwanted argument.

It doesn't matter if you say your anti-Bush, anti-American, or even anti-terrorism(depends on the context) because the end result will always be the same.

Anyway back on-topic. US magazines have most certainly recieved the game and have reviewed it, they just havn't announced it yet.

I'm a UKer, but I'm sick to death of pop-culture cut-out politics bullshit :)

Back on topic :)

Ahh.. feeling the love in this topic. :)

Anyway, US mags will review it when they do. It doesn't really matter, since every gamer and their mother will download scans of the UK reviews.

You may be right, and that wasn't my intention, but I still feel I have a duty to mention that he's a retard at least once a day. I'll try not to do it here though :)

ComradeBadger - there were no pop politics in this thread, just a joke or two that some people took too seriously.

And yeah back with the topic - there's no doubt the yankie mags have the reviews. The silence from them is deafening though, and pretty weird. Aren't they gonna lose sales from the amount of PCG scans that'll appear soon?

Maybe Valve are giving the European mags the reviews first as compensation for the 'worldwide release' thing not working out, softening us up a little, y'know? edit - actually I just re-read that and it sounds a little far-fetched!
