Why the crowbar?

I think Valve made a great move by using the first weapon as a crowbar, Because it makes the game much more real.

I think that the crowbar is perfectly suited to HL. It's just an everyday object, that could easily be lying around BMRF. As I remember, it's found next to a broken glass panel in a lift door. Also sensible, one of the scientists must have smashed the glass to escape but left the crowbar behind. It's all so perfectly believable it's a little scary. Thats the main thing I like about HL. In no other game would you face an enemy (headcrab) before you get any weapons, and your only option is to run away. Also I like the fact that weapons and health don't 'respawn' like they do in other games. I mean, once you've taken a weapon its not coming back. The same with health kits.

Ok, im rambling.

Back to topic. :)

That was random...

I don't think I'd like to stink up my grenade launcher with those nasty little buggers, though.

Have you ever used a sledgehammer? Its way to heavy and cumbersome to be used as a weapon. It would be way to hard to hit a moving target with it.
Yes, I have used a sledge hammer as recently as last weekend when I tore down a small building. I know I could use it as a weapon... but, yeah, it would probably be a bit too heavy for most of the other people that post on forums for a video game that isn't even out yet.

Well, you're certainly secure in your masculinity, aren't you? I think my analysis could do with a second reading from you. :hmph:

it's unique
and when you think half life, you think crowbar... it's stuck

Oh yeah the crowbar just seemed like part of the enviorment to me, "oh shit head crab... uhhh... CROWBAR!!! dieeeeeeeeeee!!!!"

ANyone here played the 2nd expansion to morrowind? You get a disembodied nord leg to pummel people with, now that is cool.

Anybody who is planning to create a mod for HL2, can you create a mod that has a nailgun in it. Sounds like it could be a popular weapon.

Really? I recently bought Morrowind but got tired of playing it before I got to the second expansion. It sounds like I may have to load up Morrowind again.

Exactly. Crowbars would make awesome weapons. Though golf clubs would be my personal favorite if I could choose. If Valve had to replace the crowbar for HL2, I hope they would replace it with a golf club, a baseball bat, or a framing hammer.

It would be awesome if HL2 had a nail gun as a weapon. That would make HL2 really fun. Ahhh, now im babbling...

I know a guy that went into a grocery store with a goldclub to get this guy that tried to date rape his girl friend. He found him in the freezer isle and he whacked him with the gold club. The club handle actually cut the guys stomach under the side of his ribs through his jacket. The club broke his arm and leg. That guy was lucky he didn't say "four!" and hit his skull.

This guy was phsyco and yes he went to jail, but his girl friend was actually happy that the guy got what he deserved and she got rid of her phsyco boyfriend.

The only problem was that all the other guys were too scared to date her because they feared her what her ex would do when he got out.....

It's crazy times we live in.

Crowbars simply fits perfectly into the VALVe universe.. All this vent crawling and headcrab smashing and rust and stuff..

The crowbar is such a rarity in games, it became a unique meelee weapon of choice

I'd love to see more than one crowbar in HL2. Unlikely, but it'd be cool. Old 'n rusty, new 'n sharp... hehehe. :D

Off-Topic: Can anyone help me find the picture of the crows at the bar? It's hilarious. I do da search for crow bar and I get this...

ok.. thats random, im guessing that they are what come with a crowbar when you buy it

Maybe... Or maybe they are just action figures with crowbars...

Uh, at home depot, they stick a price sticker on the crowbars and stick them in a open top box. I can't imagine there's much of a market for 'crowbar accessories'.

Why do you guys think that Valve chose a crowbar as Gordons only melee weapon in the first Half-Life? and why do you think that this "crowbar" become so popular?

Guys, he is saying in the first half-life, not why did they bring it back for hl2. Wasn't there a wrench too, or was that one of the expansion packs.... it's been a while.

Lead pipe: Wasn't that done before too?

Yes... I believe Colonel Mustard used the lead piping to murder Dr. Black in the Billiard room. Cluedo's the only game i know that used a lead pipe!

EDIT: Just remembered the lead pipe was the first weapon you used in Kingpin! DOH!

The wrench was from opposing Forces

Instead of a crowbar, HL3 should feature an anvil instead (Make the enemies face flat)

and why not freeman pic-up a simple ironl stick, because you can find it in the cyti or the docks or everywere in HL2,and it nust have necesary a especific stick can be any piece of metal(of cuorse sharped like:a pipe, oxidaded piece of a car,or just a )you can find in the ground that can be more realistic, even can use a claw of a dead ant-lion(Freeman can find a ant-lions cut in pieces by another enemy and pic-up the claw),that dont will look bad
but the crowbar is not bad,you can made fast atacks, hav a range not to short,in the real live a hit for a crowbar is deadly, and maybe in HL2 can be a new way to use the crowbar
and there will be another meele weapons?like the knife,or maybe a new one?

Wasnt it wierd though that Gordon COINCIDENTLY finds a crowbar that looks EXACTLY the same as the one he had before after he gets out of the crusher?

(Like my emphises there guys? :D)

Oooooh... baybah... :naughty:

tbh it's fairly orginal, albeit simple in design, yet effective. It's the type of object you might find lying about in a large, underground science facilities (for matinence etc) - it's the simplicity, orginallity and the yet deadly effectivness of the weapon. Presently it has become a kind of trdemark / novelty of the halflife series. It's a definite necessity, at least for half life fans, such as myself. :D
