Gary Glitter is currently trending on Twitter. For why?

According to NME news:

A Twitter account claiming to belong to Gary Glitter is saying that he is plotting a comeback this year and hopes to undertake a world tour.

Yup.

He returned to the UK in 2008 and said in a series of interviews that he would return with a new album and book at some point, but has remained silent. The account remains unverified.

The account Twitter.com/OfficialGlitter comes with the message: "The official twitter of Gary Glitter. Managed and updated by me. King of rock & roll. 2012 comeback tour details coming here soon. Watch this space!"

Further tweets read: "To answer your questions, yes, this is the official Gary Glitter twitter account. Updated by me, personally. I want to put my past behind me and focus on my music. Thank you for your messages of support."

It goes on to say that he is in touch with Twitter to get the account verified. However, the recent reveal as a fake of a verified account apparently belonging to Rupert Murdoch's wife Wendi Deng means that even an officially verified account cannot always be trusted to be authentic.

I've actually been on that Twitter account and it's very much active. Tonnes of followers.

If this is true, we are all doomed.

He was actually quite an acclaimed musician running from the 70s to the 90s. Especially popular in the 80s.

Then child porn was found on his computer when he took it into PC World for repair. All went downhill from there.
Several cases of indecent and obscene acts involving minors as young as 10 years old followed. He only recently got out of prison.

True. Difference between MJ and Glitter is that MJ got acquitted. Even though Glitter maintains his innocence and is writing an Autobiography at the moment that will apparently explain how he is innocent.

Jackson definitely had some issues, but I have a hard time imagining he molested any kids. Obviously I'm not a professional in the area, but I just never got that impression from him. It always seemed more about trying to create a childhood that he never got. I mean, shit, he was performing at the age of 6.

See, I'm not sure about this. Glitter is a contemptible individual that has been convicted of some equally vile and abject things but there were and still are a lot of fans of his music. For some people this music was what they grew up listening to and even what some musicians were influenced by.

I guess it would be hard for his fans to stop loving the music despite what he's done. When I checked out that Twitter there were a lot of people still citing him as an inspiration (some even calling him their hero) and saying they were glad he was back.

But then on the flip-side, they would be funding the career of a repeated Sex Offender.

I was never a huge fan of his music so I could give a rat's ass about it but I reckon that, from what I've seen so far, if Glitter were to make a comeback, people would buy his stuff.

I know it's wrong of me, but I'm going to assume that they aren't exactly there for noble reasons. South East Asia is a notorious child prostitution region for foreign men.

Yeah, see, like a lot of people, I personally don't believe Glitter is innocent in the slightest. There was a lot of evidence against him and the fact he was caught red-handed with child porn in the 1st place already makes him a criminal and vile person even without the obscene acts with minors cases afterward.

Unlike MJ whose cases always had some degree of ambiguity about them. Enough for him to be let go anyway. Plus people stood to gain a lot of comp from him (which they did on occasion).

I'm on the fence with MJ.
