why wasnt the Icthyosaur in the game...?

it showed up that one time at the beginning of the game when the teleported got screwed up. I dont think putting an icthyosaur in those little tiny lakes would have worked because he was huge and the lakes were shallow

Teleportation mishap? THAT was an ichy...it's not as big as you think.:|
A bullsquid is a lot smaller.

Underwater beasts are hard to code. It's hard enough working out pathfinding and collision detection and so on in a flat plane, imagine doing so in a realistic way in three dimensions... not counting getting all the animations and so on to look realistic accounting for underwater drag.

Is it much different than scripting flying objects? Manhacks, the flying photo takers and the gunships all move in 3D as well. Drag simply means they will move slower.

Manhacks, scanners, helicopters and whatever flies in HL can move whereever!
Because they FLY.
But ichtyosaurs SWIM. There is a difference between where they swim in the water and float out of the water.

Don't forget animations and so on. And drag doesn't mean they'll just move slower, it affects how they turn. Water is a dramatically different atmosphere (hah) from air. And they fly, so they can just fly over obstacles. Underwater walls?

I believe that the reason why we didn't get to see one other than the teleportation accident is because like bullsquids icthyosaur's wouldn't be able to roam freely around the canals considering that Combine were in control of the canals and they wouldn't let xen creatures roam freely. Also consider the rebels they would also try to kill bullsquids and icthyosaur so that it would make it easier for them to move around it's been about 10-20 years since the combine occupation here on earth they would have eliminated all xen wildlife. If anything now in ep2 we're further away from city 17 and we should be able to see some xen wildlife.

The manhacks can attack you underwater, can't they? Like that water-level puzzle in Route Kanal.

V-Man's Opinion on the Ichthyosaur in Half Life 2

I think that it would have been cool to fight one in Half Life 2 but there was really no place it would fit in story-line wise.
I think they'd pretty much tear Sharks a new one.

I can just imagine a shark somewhere in one of those discovery channel videos in which there in one of those cages and all of a sudden one of those things comes on camera and it engulfes it whole, then the cameraman's all like "Oh sh*t!" and it'd be on the news and everything.

I'm sad aren't I? :|

my, you people should check out the sound section of that monster. some really cool sounds. it was truly meant to be in the game.. well, black mesa source will allow that to happen.

Black mesa source?
I have no idea how they are gonna pull this off...i mean modelling and scripting a zombie and a headcrab is easy...but remaking the ichtyosaur, the tentacle and nihilanth ( using Source, so it relies on physics) is something i'd REALLY like to see.

But they could've used it somewhere else besides the teleportation scene.
The part where it attacks you gets you pumped up: "holy sh1t im gonna fight it!!"
But in the end it's just a dissapointment.

Well to me it was...:(

How to put it in:
Chase scene! See: Lost planet.. level.. 3 or 4?
