Doom 3:
graphics: awesome
physics: looks good
remake of Doom 1
typical storyline (it IS an old one)
totally diff. type of gameplay
one man against everything

Half Life 2:
graphics: awesome
physics: used as a part of the game
continuation of a good storyline
you and others against aliens and other humans

I'm not saying which one is better, they both have strong and weak points (that are diff. to many people)

they are only compaired because they are the two biggest fps to come out this year, or in the last few years even, not because they are similar gaming experiences.

Doom 3 physics are teh boring :(

They are totally different games:
Doom3 - For Rednecks
Half-Life 2 - For us clever people.

typical in most sense based on
old game where its one man against everything.
there it fits much better.

I said this on a different thread, but I'll say it again.

Doom 3 threw a gazillion polygons on one monster in a small hallway. I want realistic locations, immersive and innovative gameplay, and something more then "run and gun vs. HELL!!!" as a plot. So I agree.
Doom 3 probably throws much less polygons at you than Half-Life 2, since they use normal mapping techniques extensively on their enemy and character models.

Yes, Doom 3 is pretty much a mindless gunrunning game. But heck, it's bloody fun, and isn't that what we want in a game? Both games are incredibly fun in their own different ways.

Doom 3's addition of PDA's and having to get locker codes from them is just a gimmick to make it a little different from Doom 2. It's still a go through the maze, get the blue key, open the switch game. The rooms are tiny, much so more than Doom 2, and it's too damn dark. You rarely go outside at all. The monsters-in-the-closets that pop out as soon as you pass have been done too many times (hey, how come the closets the monsters come out of make no noise when the doors move?). There's no NPC's at all, so you don't even have to think about what you shoot.

So... you guys don't want games that are actually released? Doom III is a great game. Get over it. HL2 will come someday. And hey maybe you can preload CS:S soon too.

Don't get me wrong HL2 will be great when it's released. It's just... some of us are mortal.

I've noticed that people who think the voice recordings/PDA's are stupid are the same people who think Doom 3 is stupid.

Don't think you fit in the last category if you make posts like that. :frog:

yea we shouldn't compare the two, it really just comes down to, is the game a 'fun' experience in and of itself?

doom3 is fun for me, because of the graphics + the sound and ambience + the very awesome looking monsters + the scary mood of the whole game. all those elements came together to make a great gameplay experience by itself, imo it didn't need a plot from some novel. i didn't expect a game like halflife, they are both different, i expected a game like doom because thats what ID said they were making. and i got it, and wasn't disappointed one bit.

i think halflife2 will be a fun experience, because of the physics, the connection to the characters i have already, the variety of locations, and great storytelling(and i really like the texture work). im not going to expect the best lighting ever, or scare your pants off environments with freaky ambience. but hl2 wont need that. because hl2 isn't doom3. ill judge hl2 based on what hl2 is trying to accomplish.

if you look at what the individual games are set out to do, you won't be disappointed as much.
