whenever i try to download and play an .avi file i get some sort of error message along the lines of "this type of file is not supported", even though im using Windows Media Player and it says its supposed to play .avi files. Ive even tried numerous other media players, but i get the same sort of message with all of them. So i was wondering if theres a solution to this, or if there is some program i can use so i can watch the .avi files?

because you havnt got the right codec. google for a codec pack.

have you downloaded the divx codec and also the xvid codec, I think they are the 2 most common codecs associated with avi files, might be wrong in saying that though.

Yeah you don't have the right codec. Personally, I would see if you can find what codec it uses and just get that one codec. Check the website you got the file or google the filename and see if anyone lists what codec it uses. If you can't find out, grab Dvix and Xvid since they are popular codecs.

If you get a codec pack, be careful because they can cause problems with multiple codecs installed that are to play similar files.

Just had a look at the homepage for that vlc player, looks pretty cool!

EDIT: What a great little media player! Using it as my video player!
