Why do mods put up with all the flaming and crap on these boards?

Having used forums for many years I personally think this way is actually better.
If the mods were to crack down on the forum and enforce strict rules, people will complain that the moderators are forum nazis, threads would pop up asking why other threads were locked and deleted and the whole issue would degrade much much further than it is now.
As it is, threads are locked once the arguments, flames and trolls have run their course, then they sink naturally to the bottom of the pile where they are culled periodically to stop the database from being flooded with locked threads.
Besides, it's only a temporary anomoly, once the game is released everyone will be too busy either playing the game or posting new info about the game to care about troll/flame threads.
The lack of info also facilitates the trolling/flaming, because no-one really knows for sure what HL2 is about, people think they can say anything and get away with it, when in fact it's the opposite, the elders of the forum have dissected every last detail of the available data and can backup any claim they make while the trolls cannot.
Besides, it's good fun if you know how to handle them, don't sink to their level as they will beat you with experience, instead, offer them a logical argument to their claims and you will see a pattern emerge.
Once you've challenged a few trolls you will see the pattern much more easily.

Ive dealt with plenty of trolls. 
Its just annoying...sorting through the garbage finding the usefull info.
