McFace, that's the beauty of a CRT, you don't have to play with squished characters on a 4:3 CRT. Just use the monitor controls to squish the picture vertically and it will give everything on the screen the correct proportions.

I'd like to try letterboxed on my 17" CRT. I can't stand watching my movies in pan-n-scan, and the wider view in the game does allow you take in just a bit more of the scenery or action.

That said, I wasn't aware Half-Life 2 was going to feature a letterbox option for 4x3 screens.
