Irish is f**ked up. It is the hardest european language to pick up because there are lots of small rules.
The word for whiskey litteraly translates to life-water
There is a word that means education and beer
The word for 'to masterbate' litteraly translates to 'to pollute ones-self'

English is also messed up, it is the hardest European language to master as there are thousands of iregular verbs and has more tenses than most languages.

I heard that coca cola translates to 'to raise the dead' in Japanese

That's some funny stuff.

Glad English is my primary language :]

In Ireland we have to learn English and Irish, the 2 worst.

Chinese is so difficult. I mean, there's no 'ABC' or anything. There's only symbols. And memorising them is a pain.

I like watching Gaelic TV shows when I'm Scotland. It's nice to experience other languages.

Gaelic has a very nice ring to it. It's a very beautiful language.

Gaelic! ...I was wondering what this guy was talking about. Never heard of a language called Irish.

It isn't Gaelic, it's Gaeilge
Irish, Scotish and Welsh are all Gaelic.

Yeah English has a lot germanic grammar and romantic words...Plus its got all the Scandanavian and gaelic stuff floating about

Gaelic...

OK now I have a huge craving for some garlic bread...

Man some of the stuff you are describing...

And I thought my Spanish class was hard...

Well, if Irish, Scottish and Welsh are all Gaelic, then Irish IS Gaelic, isn't it?

Yes but I'm trying to break the common mistake of Gaelic=Irish but Gaelic is much broader than that, with some elements even in German

Speaking of German, German has words that no other laguage has a 1 word translation for. One exapmle is a word (can't remember it right now) which is a fear of getting old and lossing all chances and opertunities to succede in life.

Don't forget the word that means pleasure from the misery of others. Schadenfreude.

Like when Newcastle lost the other night.

aren't there many forms of gaelic, so by saying Irish you are specific about which one? just going by what my sis told me who took a class about Ireland.

No just one form of irish with small regional variations
but with the accents of some boggers they might as well be speaking their own unique language
And riomhaire's right about irish being ridiculously difficult
By the way his name means computer ; )

English is a very easy language to learn. It only has one definite article, few plural suffixes and easy grammar.

1337 is a good language to learn, it makes resume's look good :D

*Puts it down on his CV.*
EDIT: You misspelt weird. ;)
Also, Ive heard English is supposedly the hardest language, because of things like where, were, wear, etc. But I also heard Chinese (Or Mandarin) is the most widely spoken language. :rolling: Anyone know the truth?

Well there ARE 1.3 billion(?) people in China. But as far as i know the vast majority speak other dialects apart from Mandarin.

welsh is a weird language.

but around 85% of welsh people dont speak it anyway...

I don't think it's widely spoken. China is full of people so it's the language that most people speak, but I think English is more widely spoken.

I'm dutch and I find english the most easy language there is! :naughty:

Gaelic is the most alien language to the planet, i have never come across a language that is even remotely similar to it. English is one of the simplest languages to learn as well, due to it being so widespread and not being able to go through life without bumping into it.

I've heard that chinese and finnish are the most diffcult languages to master.

Any language is easy to learn if everybody around you speaks it but English has crazy amounts of iregular verbs and I think twice as many tenses as French.
There are 3 main dialects of Irish; Munster, Ulster and Connacht (they are 3 of the 4 provences [a bit like states] of Ireland, and Leinster [the other 1] I think uses Munster [my provence!])
Danimal, what is off topic, it is a thread about lanuage.

Why would anyone want to learn swedish? It's totally useless!

Well my brother is marrying someone from Sweden, so its pretty useful for him.
Though, his fiance speaks about 8 or 9 languages, including English.

Chinese or Russian are supposed to be hardest.
Chinese because of the thousands of characters, and for speaking, they have 4 tones (or 9 in Cantonese, I think). I've been trying to learn it on and off for 2 or 3 years now, and I've still only got a basic vocabulary.
I've been told that I'm better than most foreigners at learning it though, because apparently I have quite an artistic mind and can hear subtle differences in sounds well.
But Chinese is quite easy in terms of he and she are the same word, and words don't change for past tense, etc.

Not sure what makes Russian so hard, I haven't tried to learn it before.

English is supposed to be one of the easiest languages, or that's what a lot of people tell me who don't have English as their mother tongue.

English is the easiest language ever. Try learning derivates from Latin like Portuguese/Spanish/Italian/French...the Grammar sucks. I listen to Portuguese everyday, everywhere and I make tons of mistakes with the language in exams. I hardly make mistakes with English in exams and I listen to it very briefly and during short spans of time.

I think the Oriental languages are probably the hardest to learn, because their sound system isn't the same. I'm thinking of learning Swedish or German.

It's not hard to learn, it's hard to master.

Russian is a really strange language. I went there to Moscow for a history trip, a lot of the words I could barely pronounce at all. When you hear a Russian speaking really quickly it's just like "What the ****?" :P

Although it was great I managed to pick up lots of Soviet-Union era stuff, like officer caps, soldier trenchcoats for like 10 quid :D
