Release : November 24, 2006
Price : £149

Reports sweeping the internet at the moment are saying that the Nintendo Wii will launch on November 24, priced at just £149 and that stock will be plentiful if you want to fill your Christmas stocking.

Trade mag MCV is reporting both price and launch details as fact, even ahead of next Friday's press conference when Nintendo is expected to confirm those crucial details. Nintendo are remaining tight lipped and are apparently refusing to comment on the reports, but when such a well established and respected magazine goes early, we have to suspect there's more than a glimmer of truth to it.

We spoke to Lisa Foster, Managing Editor of MCV to see how confident the trade title is in their breaking exclusive and she told CVG, "We are very confident about the story, especially the price and that Nintendo Wii will launch in the week ending November 24."

Naturally we also contacted Nintendo to see if they have any comment on the story and we are still awaiting their reply. However Nintendo boss David Yarnton, told GI.biz that MCV's story was, "only speculation, and definitely not fact. They're not far off, but they're definitely not right," the Nintendo boss added.

CVG also contacted a number of industry sources and insiders to see what their reaction was and while most agreed with us, that the price seems right on the mark, a substantial number of our sources were a little more unsure about the actual launch date.

Most seemed to agree that November 24 might be a touch early and that an early December release would seem more likely, especially given this week's news about the launch of the PS3 being delayed until March 2007. So you pays your money and takes your choice we guess, and while we wholeheartedly back MCV's price point, we tend to favour more of an early December date for Wii launch. Either way though it's great news for Wii fans and all will be revealed next week when Nintendo make the news official. Keep it tuned to CVG for all the Wii goodness you can consume.

With reports earlier today from UK Trade magazine MCV suggesting a £149 price point and November 24th release for the Wii (see below), Nintendo UK have been quick to intrude to debunk the suggested release data.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, who spoke to Nintendo UK earlier, the MCV information is "definitely not right". According to Nintendo UK’s David Yarnton, the ‘facts’ reported by MVC are "only speculation, and definitely not fact," according to Yarnton. "They're not far off, but they're definitely not right." Could Yarnton be referring to both the date and price, or just one of the two?

He also went on to confirm that more information will be revealed during the company’s press conference next Friday.

ORLY?

hmm.. £149 is = to about $280... Wonder how much lower it'll actually be over here.

That's about $370 Australian, so it's not too bad but after spending $650 on my 360 I might wait a few months to get it but knowing me I'll probably end up preordering it. D:

Well I wonder what the real price / date will be. I'm sure it won't be a complete Pounds -> USD conversion or what Nintendo said about it being no higher than $250 USD would be false.

Damnit, more speculation? Quit posting with such misleading thread titles :angry:

If thats real. But I will be getting one just to show Sony up. (though the PSP was great but PS3 is teh bleah)

Hmm, would mean about $199 USD. Sounds perfect, even though its not fair to our UK friends, but it rarely is.

Bringing this thread back from the bottom of the page for some news and alleged info from an IGN source.

First - Wii Virtual Console Lineup & Wii is updatable/patchable

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=145809

Looks like they have some good games I think I might grab to play for old time's sake.

Second - Wii package contents and promises of more info on the 14th (duh)
http://www.revolutionportal.com/

Apparently this source is claiming we'll get the console, 2 controllers (with nunchucks) and Wii Sports in our original purchase. Allegedly Nintendo is deciding the 13th if they will include an SD card in the deal as well.

While the 2 controllers and Wii Sports is pretty much what I was thinking...I doubt we'll see an SD card included. The 2nd controller is gravy though :)

Here's to hoping it's true :cheers:

Thanks for posting that new info Amish! You've gotten me all giddy again! As soon as a price and launch date is released, I'll be down at my local EB Games preordering the system. I can't wait to play those classics again.

Great news for Nintendo fans and gamers in general. :thumbs:

I hate to be one to state the obvious, but if you really can't want to play the classics then just download an emulator. I mean, a "virtual console" is available right now for every older system completely free. This is one of those features that really isn't worth much to anyone who knows how to use a computer unless the prices are very very low. It's especially useless for me as I still own the original systems.

As for the Wii, it would be nice if it launched for $150. Asking more than that is pushing it ... I mean that controller could probably be hooked into any console (like the Gamecube for instance) and you have a Wii right there. The Wii itself isn't that great, and even at $150 it would be very overpriced compared to the other two consoles, it's just the controller we're interested in.

The more I think about it ... no hard drive, probably not the greatest online, and by far the worst tech ... that controller better be really good.

Yeah, or god forbid it has really fun games :rolleyes:

As for emulators/roms. I'd rather not steal if I don't have to especially the classics.

All the consoles have really fun games. The Wii's only distinguishing feature is the controller, so it better be really good.

Nintendo will reveal something very interesting for all you modders out there during TGS so keep an eye out. I won't say what it is... other than it's awesome... and IT HAS ALREADY BEGUN! (dun dun duuun).

Stay tuned.

A rumour currently going around suggests Wii Sports has in fact around 30 games as opposed to the current 4 known about.

I hope Wii Sports is bundled with the console.

iD Software support Nintendo

Not worth its own thread so:

Cubed3 said:
id Software is renowned for its triple-A standard games, such as those in the Doom and Quake series. After hearing of several 'home-brew' projects appearing on the DS that are based on id properties, Cubed³ decided to throw a few questions at the company. Below is the result...

Cubed³: At QuakeCon this year, John Carmack stated that certain mobile phone games, such as Doom RPG, could end up on the Nintendo DS. Are these firm plans now, are there any other details you can share with us, and what other mobile titles could be remade on the system?

Todd Hollenshead: There aren't any firm plans as of now. We're still evaluating the platform. The primary DS candidate would be Orcs & Elves, but it would be a new title in that game universe and not a port from cell games to the DS.

C3: Nintendo fans were treated to Doom on the SNES, as well as the first two Quake titles on the Nintendo 64. With Nintendo DS homebrew developers already showing how the likes of Doom can work very well on the portable, has id Software considered any plans for Doom, Quake or other such titles on the DS?

TH: Not yet, at least, but it's not out of the question.

C3: What are your thoughts on the Nintendo Wii in general and how it compares to the XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3?

TH: I don't know much about the Wii other than just what I've read, so it wouldn't really be fair for me to make comparisons. I think the Wii has a lot of cool potential and Nintendo always makes awesome games for their console, so I bet its going to be successful even if it lacks the raw power of the 360 or PS3.

C3: The unique control system has been stated to be perfect for the FPS genre and downloading via the WiConnect24 online service seems ideal for new maps, upgrades and so on. Could you see id Software properties working well on the system? And have you had chance to try out any tests with the development kit yet?

TH: We don't have any dev kits that we're working with so answering at this point would just be speculation, and I'd rather avoid that. If the UI really ends up being an awesome fit for FPS games then we will certainly pay attention to it.

If only Valve showed as much confidence as other developers do about the system. Even a port of XBox HL2 would do. But as it is, we could get some pretty cool stuff from iD if they really do like the console.

He's doing a good job at not actually giving any info. Nintendo do make cool first party titles... thats more of a fact than anything... they have Miyamoto. It's kinda cool because it's a new concept... so thats given. Which leaves... nothing :)

It's sounding quite likely we'll see an early launch.

Clever users investigated a number of work agencies postings and found recent job openings for Nintendo's North Bend location, which houses the facility that packages and distributes the publisher's products. However, the most compelling job posting is listed directly on Nintendo's official website. Nintendo of America is looking for a production agent trainee to work out of its North Bend facility, and the person will most definitely be handling as many Wii systems as they can get their hands on.

Directly from the Nintendo job posting:

* "It's an exciting time to be a part of Nintendo's team! Millions of eager fans are eagerly anticipating the launch of our revolutionary new console, Wii. As a Production Agent Trainee, you'll be on the front-lines--working tirelessly to ensure they don't leave stores empty handed this holiday season.

The REAL price and launch details should be with us in a day's time.

Nintendo's press even in Japan will be running during these hours:

* 8:00PM (Wednesday) - 2:00AM (Thursday) EDT
* 5:00PM (Wednesday) - 11:00PM (Wednesday) PDT
* 1:00AM (Thursday) - 7:00AM (Thursday) GMT/UTC
* 2:00AM (Thursday) - 8:00AM (Thursday) BST
* 10:00AM (Thursday) - 4:00PM (Thursday) Japan Time

And six hours after that finishes, the US event starts.
Times for all three conferences are here, for those who are interested.

Needless to say... the fanboys are buzzing :D

My mind just adjusted itself to "So excited that I can't express it fully" mode.

Well...

http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732669p1.html

Wii to release Nov 19th at $250 with Wii Sports.

This is slightly underwhelming. I figured it'd be a little sooner and I was hoping it'd have another controller thrown in. Ah well. Still definitely buying one.

Seems weird to have a launch on a Sunday though...

Strange that the NYT is the one to break the news and not Nintendo as well...

Well, there was speculation that it'd be closer to Christmas, so I'm happy. And I was sort of expecting them to make up the cheap console price with peripheral sales anyway. Hopefully there's atleast a slightly more expensive package with maybe a remote/nunchuck and classic controller or something.
