Will Breen become an ally?

Maybe his help is needed to escape City 17 white its slowly crumbling to the ground bit by bit, but as he fullfills his part of the deal and is about to escape too a Sniper hits him ftw :D :p

Thats almost sad. Almost.

Sad in a sympathetic movie style way, or sad as in, "you said pathetic n00b g00 t00 h3ll 11!1!111" ?

I would have felt sad in a sympathetic way, if it wasn't for the fact that he tried to KILL me!

Human Sheild! Aid The Resistance Breen!

This is all presuming he survives, which is unlikely :-p

Samon, you seem to be increasing sure of yourself to the point where you almost seem to think you are infallible.

I'm next to certain Breen has survived. Well, if I'm wrong, be sure to rub it in my face come Episode 1's release. Infact, I can almost see release day and the ep1 forum.

"SAMONLOLPWNTBREENDIED!"
And countless threads more of the same topic.

Yeah, but that's just Samon.

However... it seems highly unlikely that Valve would just kill Breen off like that. He's too good of a character to just toss out. Granted, I think limitting his use would perhaps be best in the grand scheme of things. One of the things that makes Breen great is that he's so... "distant". (that's not really what I mean) I like him best on Monitors, as good as he is in person, he's too dignified and proper to make everything personal. I like him best when he's hands-off.

I doubt he'll become an ally, though it is possible. The Combine will likely just forget about him.

The reason it's so obvious that Valve are going to bring him back is because he has such an appeal. He's a unique, interesting villain with fantastic dialouge. Why waste him? We barely saw him in HL2 and only began to see how superb he was when he began to address you directly on the monitors throughout the Citadel.

Menacing, sympathetic, sarcastic, anxiety...he showed a great deal of emotions throughout and for me was one of the driving forces within 'Our Benefactors'. He's a character that reveals Valves facial technology and ability to portray story that really should not be wasted.

What role could Breen possibly play now? He's lost control and the Benefactors want him dead. the resistance wants him dead. Alyx wants to kick him in the ***s. So whch side could he possibly work for?

Best idea ever. I can imagine him going in the wasteland and hiding in a hole somewhere

Why can't the rebels use him? It would be rather hackneyed if we have to fight against Breen again in EP:1

In Episode 1 Breen will mount an Antguard. He will then go on a rampage across C17 like a drunken idiot screaming "TEH COMBINE IS TEH WIN!".

A lot of us seem to believe that Breen will have lost favor with the Combine, but I'm starting to think that the Overwatch Soldiers could lose the Combine's favor as well. My rationale is from a particular Breencast in Nova Prospekt, in which Breen is addressing the "trans-human arm", suggesting that they need to prove themselves to the Combine by catching Gordon Freeman, and he even says that it may be necessary for their survival. I get the idea that Overwatch was Breen's invention, and not that of the Advisors. I think that in Breen's dealing with the Combine, Breen suggested using humans as soldiers as an alternative to their eradication. I think Breen wishes to see humanity live on in the form of troopers. I think that humans who joined the Combine have a lot to prove to their new masters if they are going to be viewed as being a worthy addition to their armies. Not only has Breen failed, but the entire Overwatch has failed miserably as well.

I wonder too if becoming an Overwatch is entirely voluntary. I can see the Combine really wanting to turn Gordon into an Overwatch and a leader of them. Not only would it bolster Breen's position with the Combine Overlords, but it'd also be a huge blow to the Resistance if he could pull it off.

Of course, it could be that the Stalkers are what happens when someone resists the Overwatch-ification: their brains fry. And the Overwatch are the successful conversions because they wanted to become a part of the Combine army.

The impression that I get is that humans are shipped to facilities like the one you start the game in. They get treated harshly, and are given poor meals. They are encouraged to become Civil Protection in return for better conditions. Civil Protection are simply traitorous humans in a suit. This is why Barney can disguise himself as one. It isn't until a CP member volunteers to become an Overwatch Soldier that they undergo invasive surgery involving cybernetic parts and the general grafting of parts of their suit into their bodies. By this time, the soldiers have completely forgotten their past and any connection or empathy they had towards other humans. That process is likely induced by chemicals in addition to intense brainwashing. We know the Combine are poisoning the water supply to make people forget what they used to be. The effective Combine Soldiers are upgraded to Elites, which I imagine probably involves even more surgery and loss of humanity.

It seems obvious that anyone who refuses to join Civil Protection after a certain period of time is shipped to the Citadel or some other building where the surgery happens, and are turned into Stalkers. It is interesting to note that there are no women in Overwatch, so I assume that they are automatically designated to become Stalkers. Stalkers and Overwatch are both certainly slaves to the Combine Empire, but the difference is that Overwatch are cut out for combat, and Stalkers are the ones who are only cut out for menial labor. This is why I believe it is silly that Stalkers carry lasers.

Something about them that seems a little dubious is the fact that Valve's commentary on the Stalker is that because they are human, they are supposed to present a moral dilemma every time you have to kill them. Well, I am fully aware that Overwatch used to be human as well, and I have no qualms about killing them.

But then again, the Combine forces volunteered for it. Although that doesn't make them entirely unsympathetic and the game is very morally ambiguous.
