I founda new trailer on fileshack.com shows some more in-game clips, and this game just looks so cool, im sure most of u konw its using the source engine with all the new HDR features in it, just take a look at the water in this trailer, and the detail in the dragon, do u think when HDR comes on that HL2 will look COMPLETELY different?

there was a reason i said fileshack.com cuz the trailer is on there, its not on IGN.com

HL2 levels WILL NOT take advantage of HDR because that would be quite a big download(a few gigs).

To see how HL2 will look diffrent with HDR and alot higher polygon rates see Lost Coast.

lol what if vavle gave ppl the choice to redownload the hl2 files and buy it retail with hdr that would be cool

I could have sworn that Valve was going to make everything HDR after the release of The Lost Coast (at least eventually)?

It was talked about, but I believe they actually said they wouldn't.
Ill dig it up.

I believe the main challenge is they're having to do four art passes on each bit of art they create to simulate correctly the different lighting levels. They need much more detailed models, much higher res textures and additionally do each texture four times... I believe.

I think the official line is, they're working on tools that will make the process quicker and more automated, if this happens then they may patch Half-Life 2, but they have higher priorities.

HL2 will make use of some HDR features, but due to the lack of the extra art resources required to make it fully HDR compatible, you won't see a massive increase in detail like you will with LC.

damn, i was hoping that HL2 would be completely HDR when lost coast came out, im not as excited for LC now

It'd probably require an 8GB download and Valve months of development time to do an extra three passes on the art in HL2. It's not worth it. Just be happy that future titles will probably use it more and more, mods will use it and that TLC will look fooking great ;)

i agree.

after chris' explanation, it seems as this would be pretty time consuming to do. valve would need relatively many team ressources to make this happen, just to add some more realism to hl2. gamers look forward to dod:source, lost coast and the add-on. there's valve's main focus. adding hdr to hl2 would probably slow their progress too much down.

they could release a new GOTY version of half life 2 later on with this fancy stuff to make the offer more attractive.

Yes, it will contain some improved lighting effects such as HDR blooming.

So do you mean that it will actually use 4 different texture files, as opposed to using one and applying an effect to it? Or do you mean that they have to check out how every texture looks at every exposure level (or 4 optimum samples). It seems like a wasteful way of doing HDR to use 4 different textures (quadrupling the size).

Im going to go on a limb and say that i think HL2 will take full advantage of HDR support, HDR must of been completed a while ago if they have actual in-game footage of dark messiah, and it looks amazing, its not some early crap build of a game. So i think valve may have been working on revamping hl2 this entire time, at least im hoping cuz this is what i want!

watching those videos of Dark Messiah... color me ****ing impressed!!! Looks really really neat.

Even after the explanation he's given you  ... they've been working on other things too. DoD:S (which has been made HDR compatible iirc.) is the biggest one, along with lost coast and the beginnings of aftermath. I did hear that valve would make everything HDR, but i highly doubt that HL2 levels will be, they probably meant from now on, like Chris_D has said, the update would be HUGE!

Valve'll probably start work on HL2 Aftermath and perhaps another mod after the release of lost coast.
