Im wondering cuz im thinking about getting the dell inspiron 8500 laptop with the WUXGA screen. Also, its native resolution is 1900x????, would this be cool for gaming?

Sorry, if this should be under the tech forum...:dork:

Yes this has been discussed before and I think valve will implement support for widescreen users.

Yes, I asked Gabe this question in an email and got a reply within minutes.

HL2 will support widescreen resolutions!

Gabe said they are using a resolution of something like 2048*1152 on their widescreen plasma in the valve office! So yes, it deffinately will suport widescreen.

YAY! :cheese:

Digerati going into Computer Stealing mode.

***must get hands on computer that runs HL2 @ 2048x1152***
***must steal Widescreen Plasma Display***

Thanks guys I appreciate it...Heard anything about the Dell Inspiron 8500??? Im thinking about getting one, thats why I asked about the res.

Yep, I've heard of it.

Just want to let you know the keyboard is rickety. It only has a 2:20 hour battery life...which isn't very long.

Otherwise it's a pretty good laptop.

Wasn't the first time we ever even saw live gameplay (e3) in a widescreen format?

if your going to buy that laptop then buy the one with the Geforce4 ti4200 option as its faster than the mobility radeon 9000...

Actually, if I were you I would wait for the ATI Mobilty 9600 chipset or the GeForce FX Go5600. The ATI is the faster of the two (by a comfortable margin), and currently these are the ONLY Direct X 9 chipsets available on the market for laptops. The only problem is that they have yet to enter the mainstream; they can only be purchased from high-end manufacturers such as VoodooPC.

Check out this ExtremeTech article for more information.

If you are interested in running HL 2 on a laptop at 1920*1200, you would certainly want to wait something like this - especially for the DX9 capabilities.

I am also looking into a Dell laptop. They are the best I've seen and the pricing is incredible. The only downside to the Inspiron 8500s is that they do not support processor speeds as high as the Inspiron 5150 series (which only support 3.06 P4 with HT). As far as battery life, if you are interested in getting a machine that powerful, you are obviously not concerned with how long it will last on the road. The Desktop Replacements are not meant to last a long time, but rather to do just that - replace your desktop, which is usually plugged in all the time.

Yeah, running at a 13xx*768 resolution on a widescreen monitor.

Yea, im with you RickyB. Im gonna wait till they get the better graph cards, and I also saw the article by extreme tech. Dell just needs to hurry their asses up cuz im leaving for school a week from tomorrow and need to get a comp REAL soon, and anyways, I doubt they will have them that soon;( Ill just have to wait a bit and use the school comps to type papers.
