My best friend bought a comp I had 2 years ago and he's just curious. I can't really tell seeing as some are good some are bad so here it is:

1.4ghz amd athlon (t-bird i think)
ati 9800 pro
895mb of sd ram

That's SDR SDRAM I guess... He might have trouble with a lot of enemies on the screen, or in scenes involving complicated physics, but I think it should run HL2 fine.

*Edit: we don't have a benchmark tool or anything, so this is speculation to some degree. We're just working off of what VALVe has been telling us..

It's well above the min. reqs. so, yes.

he could reap many more frames if he got a better cpu, even a 2600+ would be a big leap. hes going to find that he will get great visuals but not so great framerate with a 1.4 ghz cpu pulling him back

If he doesn't have any money to spend that computer will run the game just not at the desired quality. It'll run at the lowest possible quality seeing as how in a new interview they said the newest min req for a processor is 1.2 GHz.

EDIT: Here are the min requirements.

[Doug Lombardi] The min spec is:
1.2 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
DirectX 7 level graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard

I'd suggest updating the sticky with the min specs if this is true.

It'll run on higher than lowest quality. His processor is weak, but his graphics card and RAM make up for that.. I wouldn't expect to run it at highest settings, but definitely above the lowest

yea whats going to happen is he'll get very similar framerate on all settings except insanely high ones, like 1600x1200 with cranked up aa and af, thats when the x800s will shine.

If he does have some extra cash he should invest in a new processor. But if he doesn't he is fine.
