Will Not Accept CD Key, Tells Me To Install Game(Already Installed)

Alright, the following error occures when I am trying to "Register a product I already own..." on the Play Games_Half-Life2 screen in Steam.

I enter my CD Key(it is correctly typed), and a pop-up box tells me:

"Instalation of Half-Life2 Retail Standard is required before continuing.
Please insert your Half-Life2 Retail Standard CD/DVD into the drive and select 'install' from the autorun menu."

Well, guess what? I already have installed HL2...twice in fact.

Any suggestions?

my cd key wont work

its giving me the shits, it says its not valid...

Ok.

I uninstalled and reinstalled both SteamingPile and HL2, and they work...now to try to actually PLAY the game....here we go.

The CD was poorly writen on the 1st CD "case". There are 2 lines: The top is the code itself, the bottom number on the 2nd line(with "Half-Life 2") is not.

For the first problem,

I had the same problem just uninstall and reinstall the game and it should then work. Finally i got on this morning but then had to go to work
