i have a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420. Will HL2 run ok on this? or should i wait for the xbox version, as i don't have a lot of money to spend. Or is there a somewhat cheap card i could get that would be an improvement.

umm, your card will NOT be able to run it at med settings, and prolly low. Its jsut a crappy card, sorry to say, and i dont think there will be a half life 2 version for Xbox. As for a cheaper card, i dont know what you mean by "cheap" but a 9600 PRO will run the game at max detail REALLY fast. Its a nice card, especially for half life 2, if i was you, id go with it, it beats out the 500$ Geforce FX 5900 ULTRA lol.

it would also really help if you could show us your system specs.

there WILL eventally be a xbox version of hl2, but thats not gunna be for a LONG time.

honestly, i hate Xbox, just cause its a product, not a REAL gameing system, Xbox 2 will be wayy better, including the almight ATI GFX processor :) ill be sure to snap that up as well as PS3:E gamecube, never really been into those kiddy games. but i LOOOOOOOVE super monkey ball! best game ever! (not really lol)

I have the same card. Bought a 9600pro on newegg on saturday! I cant wait!

you could spend around 120-150 dollars and get a 9600 Pro. but like the rest said the mx wont run hl2 so good.

i really dont think you know what your talking about.

depending on his computer settings we really dont know what settings he can run hl2 on. but will probally be able to run at med/low settings, (more med if he has a good comp).

there is going to be a xbox version, eventually.

and i doubt the 9600 will run at max settings "REALLY fast" ...probally max settings with 40-60 fps :\

i really think that no card this year will have higher fps than 100 (which i consider "REALLY fast" for hl2).

:afro:

yeah its the card that came with the computer so flame it all you want! how much would the 9600 pro cost me? and where would be a good place to buy it? Forgive me as I am a console gamer for exactly this reason, I get sick of having to upgrade for new games all the time.

The only thing there you got right is that MX420 is a crappy card. 9600 Pro will not run max details "REALLY" fast. Even with this card you will probably have to sacrafice some quality to get 60 FPS. This is all in the light that you are a gamer that doesn't play it on 800X600.

I like xbox and all, but HL2 on it? The horror, the horror

how much are you willing to spend? i not sure how much GF4's are going for, but they seem to run the game well in DX 8 mode quite well. You might want to try that if its more than 50$ cheaper than the 9600 PRO, but id still STRONGLY suggest you go with the ATi, cause theyr DX 9 support is AMAZING!

anything above 30fps if good. And the lowest the benchmark got was 40fps at 1280x1024. That I think will suffice.

i agree 100%

If you want a constant 60FPS all the time on all levels, looks like you will have to wind back those settings for a 9800 PRO aswell :(

for me, anythign above 40 FPS is good, after that you cant really tell the diff cause the human eye sees only around 30 FPS. SO anything higher jsut satisfies the soul :E
that is if its 40 FPS steady and never changing.

i was merely telling you guys that i DID ask for the system specs, adn my 1st assumtion was only based on the info he had givin me, which was his graphics card, obviously i cant tell him how well he can run the game without some more specs, its jsut not everyday you see a P4 3 GHz 1 gig of RAM and a GF MX 420 together in a comp.

and next time, please dont be so ignorant.

i love it when people use that gay excuse

human eye sees like 20-25fps... but on computer screens its diffrent, you will DEFINATELY notice the diffrence between 25 fps and 60+ fps.

and i never said you didnt say that, im just telling you.

You don't play with your eyes. Your reaction should be better than that if you want to be the best in the world.

For normal gamers, theres no need going over 30 FPS. My 9600 Pro will suffice.

40-60 IS really fast. you cant really tell the difference over 30 anyway, so why they hell would you buy a card to gain 30 fps over 40?

no you wont, you wont see any difference if it CONSTANTLY stays at 40 FPS, but if its 40 msot of the time, and you spin your view really fast and your FPS goes down, then duh, you WILL see a diff, but if its 40 constant, you CANT see the diff. THE HUMAN EYE CANT SEE MORE THAN 40 FPS, thats why TVs run the FPS at 29.97 i think.... go do some research. And if the eye cant see more that 30 FPS on a tc, then monitors the same, its CRT, same shit, tube.

i never said you did...

I can see a difference from 30fps and 60fps or even 40 fps and 60fps.. big difference.

are you serious? honestly 100% truthfully, i dont, and my eyesight is really good .....

but to tell the truth, seeing 100 FPS does feel rewarding, adn does make it seem faster :E

dont count on it.

(I have one to, I'm just saying)

Me too. Research has shown that the human eye can detect differences well over 120 fps, but whatever.... I just get tired of people talking about how 30 fps is some magical number over which you can't tell the difference. The only reason movies (which run at 24 fps) look fluid is because of some slight motion blurring that occurs on the film. Without it, films would look a lot more jumpy.............. BLAH

lol, that word reminds me of Agent Smith in Reloaded. =D

Anyways, 40 fps is an average and there is a good chance that if you have an average of 40 the fps will dip below 30 and maybe 10 in many instances. This is why people want to get as much fps as possible so that they don't have to deal with slow downs, because fps is dynamic not static.

The reason people think 30 is some magical number is because they have eyes, and have seen things go from 30 to 60. If you claim you can see the difference between 40 and 50 fps I hate you. its as simple as that.

exactly what i was saying... its not your eye interpreting the fps. its the fuggin video card. now if your video card cant go 60+ fps but goes 20fps, you well certainly notice the diffrence.

i know that, but if you had 40 FPS CONSTANT, then everything would be fine :)

I don't think there's much of a problem with an MX. I have an MX and can run games such as BF1942 at max settings with no problem at all. I shouldn't have too much trouble running HL2 at above average settings. It's the RAM and CPU that matter. If I really have a problem with running HL2 I still can buy a radeon 9800.

Well, research, or no research, I cant tell the diff from 35 to 60.
