- Will Won users be referred to steam dl when this happens?
Probably not, but any game you still play on WON will be unplayable online after 7-31.

- Is WON really going down 7-31?
Yes.

- Is WON going down just for cs or everywhere?
HL/all the online mods will be unplayable over the net if you don't install Steam.

- Is the lack of a tfc notification just another oversight?
Not sure to be honest.

Yes WON will die out this summer and you will have to download steam if you want to play CS or any other HL based mod for that matter.

Thanks for the useless response. Did you even read my post?

Sorry about that, i messed up a bit, thought i was making a new post, added the answers to your post.
I just hope it's ok

Well thanks. You confirm my community's biggest fear. For the most part, few are playing steam tfc at any given time in relation to WON tfc.

Example:http://www.serverspy.net/site/stats/modstats.html?g=0&mod=tfc reports the stats for Half-Life running the tfc mod currently has 2662 players in 782 servers. http://www.steampowered.com/status/game_stats.html reports there are currently 1,236 steam players on 775 servers. Concluding the difference is WON players total 1,426 players on 7 WON servers doesnt make sense...but if you were in my community you'd know full well at any given time at least half the tfc community are playing WON. Overall, estimates that only 20-30% tfc folks play or even know about steam.

Their game is about to be pulled with zero notice.

gg VALVe. Hack out 80% of a now forgotten but once huge community.

Well why dont you tell you're community about steam?

I heard that you get a message now when you try to connect to WON that it tells you about steam.

You heard wrong. cs servers only.

Well once it goes down they will find out about steam simple enough.

The tfc community is a minute part of steams demographic.

Without notice? so you mean TFC players don't have an internet browser? C'mon stop being so stupid man, it was all over the HL websites.

whoa, now I'm "stupid"? Past tense "was"? Youre defending VALVe? They screwup...once again. You call me "stupid" for looking out those who only play the game?

Get a clue.

How did they screw up?

Steam has been in "beta" for about 1 year. Im sorry but if you are in the half life community you would of found out about steam by now.

So i think you and all the tfc players who don't know about steam should get a clue.

Advising only cs

.

I have & have known about steam since before it came out. I encourage you to not make any further assumptions about my intelligence. Instead, read what I'm saying.

Although I have a clue and disagree with you there, I agree with you many tfc players do not. This is exactly my point. Thank you for agreeing with me. Wouldnt you also agree tfc players should be fairly provided a similar hint as other hl mods are?

Yeh they will probably put a warning when it closes down or very close when it closes down.

wtf

its 2 weeks till the death of WON. Isnt that close enough? there are literally thousands of players and SERVER OWNERS who do not know about steam and think its the end of tfc. These people payed for there CD and KEY just like the CS players. Many have helped WON grow and bring new players into the game and these new players BUY THE GAME CD! Its pretty lame of VALVE to not give them the same respect and courtesy they give to CS players. Kinda like renting a house from someone for years then one morning they show up and nail your door shut and never explain why. BG valve.

If valve acts like this now, what can we expect from them in the future? Seems to me they forget where the money in thier paycheck came from.

well.. theres not much anyone can say to change things.. but the one thing u can do for ur community is to tell as many pple about Steam as possible.

if u run a TFC server.. maybe somewhere in the messages have a message referring to Steam and pointing to the Steam website.

face it, the change is going to happen whether u and ur community like it or not.. i guess the real question is.. do u care enough about TFC? if so.. then moving to Steam is something u just need to do.

sorry if my post sounds harsh or mean.. i didn't mean to come off that way.. its just that for some pple change is a tough thing..

Jeez what is it with you?

Their CDKeys are still valid and will work on Steam, and these people have to check HL websites for updates and news anyway so they will find out eventually. And if they don't that's too bad but life goes on.

And I bet you're in Rip2shreds clan or something am I right?

foe is in .id, we're in a guild, quite a large one but only folks who play tfc would know it. We run both WON & steam servers. We have a global population, USA & Europe based. It's not my intent to impress, just to encourage a wee bit more respect from this forum than has been expressed.

We've been advertising &/or discussing about this change on our forums, our irc channels & our servers for some time. Everything we can do, obvious stuff like motd.ini & adminmod repeating messages, we've been doing. We have been supporting tfc for years, without the assistance of VALVe. All we ask for is equal treatment from them as they extend to other mods. We thought this forum might provide some access. Instead it's obvious now we're simply spinning our wheels educating you folks.

Sorry to bother, have a nice game.

I'd imagine the only easy way to pipe messages out to people playing on the WON servers is by putting the message into the VAC module, then only displaying it if the user is running an old version of the engine.

Slight problem here. Back in the olden days of WON, there was pretty much only VAC support for CS.

So it's not that they're not trying to get the word out, but it's a technical limitation. They can't print the message to TFC users without getting them to update to a new version of TFC. Which is what they're trying to tell them about in the first place.

They gave you 5 years of free net play on the WON service, its getting terminated, and they are using THEIR own money to fund the steam servers, so don't think they will screw you over, because they won't..This is much easier way of them getting patches out anyways, now you don't have to look for sites with the patches when they update something, and they can update when they want, not just every 6 months or so.

Doesn't it cost money for valve to run won? Or better yet the game cd-key is valid to make a steam account? Oh noes, valve is finally shutting down won after they've been telling everyone they would once they got steam to where they want it to be.
