So you have purchased HL2 through steam.....Whatever your personal experience, good or bad, will you buy the next big release through steam.

For me.
No.

I think for HL2 it was the right choice for me to purchase through Steam. I had no big problems and avoided the problems other people faced with Steam or the CDs/DVD. I played CS:S for weeks and had HL2 activated and running within 30 minutes of the release time.

Updates are fine that way, and the multiplayer works great but Steam needs options to remove patches and I'd prefer it if the company would send out a DVD copy to people who downloaded who want a back-up copy.

I'd probably only buy something through Steam if it was only available on Steam and nowhere else or it offered extras that way. Most times, I think I'd go with DVD or CD at retail.

depends on the product. i think HL2 got away with it because of it's fame.

It worked flawlessly for me for Half-Life 2 so why not.

EDIT: Thread needs a poll. ;)

Ok, added a poll, and lets keep this on topic.
Also, try and give reasons too.. that would be a good idea.

From what i hear:

buying from a store and then installing and validatingorwhatever throung steam is a hellish process

From my experiance:

dling in incriments during the night, being able to play 15 min after release, and having absolutly no problems

yeah, id definatly pick steam. It makes updating and managing the hundreds of mods ill be getting much easier. Also i tend to scratch cd's beyond usability within a year so...

I bought retail and I would do it again. I don't like the idea of not having a hard copy around.

Thank you for adding the poll and sorting the thread out....
:)

Yup.
Only took about 20min for it to "Unlock" my files at 0 hour on release day.
I've had nothing but good experience with Steam.

I didn't buy through Steam anyway, but still had to use it to play.

Again? not a chance.

After years of waiting for the game of games, without the luck of WhiteZero and many others the whole 2 day auth process and Steam induced game buh - buh - bugs killed whatever fun I could have had playing it, which has left a very bitter taste in my mouth - evident in most of my clashes with various equally adamant pro-steam members of this forum.
Not to mention my personal opinions on this kind of delivery platform that have already been argued to death.

Still, the chances are it will become commonplace withing a few years, by then I will be too old and too senile to be playing games anyway - for me the glory days of gaming are over. Now where's my pipe and tartan slippers?

I myself had no problems... my brother did have some problems.. but after mailing steam about it the fixed it fairly quick.
So yes I probably will but through steam..
the only thing the need to ad is different ways of payment.. like paypal or just from your personnal back account.. not just creditcards

The only problem I have ever had with steam is the friends thing not working very well. But aside from that, its all good.

And I have to agree with those that said downloading at night so its ready to go on release was fantastic. I was in ventrilo with a mate who had also ordered through steam and it was a case of
Him - "You done yet?"
Me - "Nearly..."
Him - "Done now?"
Me - "Yup, lets rock"
Me - *As the game loads* "How long has this game been out again"
Him - "About an hour..."
Me - *Loading done, starting game* "I love you steammmm"

So yes, I will buy through steam again. It would alway be my prefered option to not have to go into a crowded shopping center...

Well said. couldn't have put it better myself.

I'd like to add that I think HL2/steam has set PC Gaming back at least 6 years. Having games that require draconian anti-pirate measures can only be damaging to the industry at least as much as it aims to protect it. On top of that games that require such advanced tweaking & compromises to get running well have no future except with those that are preapred to go through all this in the first place. So PC gaming has been reduced to the geek & his PC mentality & the whole idea of 'plug & play' has been set back to plug & pray (Or in the case install & obey!!).

Will I buy another Valve or Steam product? Not a chance. The honeymoon of PC gaming is over for me. From this point on I will approach any PC game with extreme caution & dread. As for Valve's prodocts - Well, After the problems I had with HL2 I'd be bloody stupid to dive headlong into anything they put out ever again regardless of how good it is supposed to be.

you guys are morons go download the vengeange release and stop pulling out your ass hair. NO STEAM? Yes you too can help support the resistance against american advertising, spyware, Iraq and bushes puppets. "Yes you too can help support the resistance against american advertising, spyware, Iraq and bushes puppets."

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LMAO!!!!

Bye.

hey my accounts still here...for now, anyway to help people who cant get a girlfriend and who have 5 blank cds handy. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING OVERNET VERSION 0.53

k GUYS. You must be able to "double click" on an item to proceed here...its going to get pretty intense. Double click on the overnet icon on your desktop. Now...if you dont have overnet (cracked) installled you are completely insane and need to be put to rest...unless you are a rich millionare...etc... who can afford anything computer wise. Now if overnet is installed you are in the right place. Breathe. Now click "search" and if you get horny on the way download some porn from kazaa lite which is ALSO installed on your maybe bad maybe good computer. After a quick beat off continue to type "Half Life 2 bin" in the search capsule. Then magikly some "words" will appear on your screen. Dont be frightened they are just words, and you can beat off later if you need to. The "words" you are looking for are something like...Half. life. 2. vengeance.retail.cd1.bin". Now for the scary part...DOUBLE CLICK. Wow. if need be go to Staples and purchase a 10 pack of cdr's. Why a 10 pack? Well you only need 5 but...you will most likely burn some full audio cds, porn or other items later anyway. Back to the point...after completing the task of download the first cd...convert the image to nero image using Ultra iso which is also installed on your computer (we hope) and to make a shitty long boring gay post short...suck it and download the rest of the 4 bin files.
SPREAD THE WORD...(not your legs...)

Can you please never post on these boards ever again? Just reading that post made me sick due to your stupidity. And to be on topic I voted YES, because at 12:03 EST I was playing Half-Life 2 with one one very minor problem that was solved within an hour. So everyone who gets off ranting about Steam, you mind as well stop playing PC games because it is the future of game distribution.

What a coincedence I feel sick too...but, i dont go telling everyone about it. My pain will pass. And yes I will never post on these boards again because there is no point. All there are are stupid americans who can't seem to understand an advertisement free world. These boards are mainstream, and I will be sure to stay as far away from them as possible. You robots offer no help...and within the hour...hmmmmmm...im running hl2 on 1 ghz and with 60 fps. Steam slows the shit down. I never had 1 single problem with the game yet...except that I SCREWED THE GAME UP and was wanting some help thats why I came to this mainstream place in the first place, but never again. It is not the future of gaming because there will always be groups like Vengeance.

Gee I wonder why people never wanted to help you with an attitude like that? :upstare:

Also you said you didn't want to be here 2 posts ago. So why are you still here?
