Im planning on buying a new pc this month from overclockers, but i ran into a little problem. I was planning on buying: AMD Athlon 64 3200 Winchester 90nm (Socket 939) - Retail, as a cpu but under specifications it says, "Note - Check your motherboard supports Winchester CPU before purchasing. If unsure contact your motherboard manufacturer for further information and a possible BIOS update."

can anyone shed some light on this? are winchesters somewhat problematic? can anyone tell me if the MSI K8N Neo2 motherboard supports it?

any help appreciated.

The bios version prior to their release did not document support for the CPU but when new CPUs are released board makers update their Bios to be compatible and recognize the CPU with the proper ID and running at the correct specs.

They give you that warning so you do not expect it to work out of the box with board that you may have bought prior to the CPU's release. It may need a bios update. That's all.

The same boards shipping shortly after the CPU's release will have the updated Bios version which is the same version you can update to.
