Windows 7 Home Premium $30 for college students

For the 10th time, all your files will get saved (if you opt to) in a Windows.old folder.
You won't lose anything.

Is there a way to install the upgrade on a PC without Windows? I remember this being possible by entering the CD key of a windows product you own after you install.

Any ideas?
From what I've read, you install a copy of Vista (perhaps borrow someone's disc), and use someone's key (you don't have to be connected to the internet, therefore it will never check it out), then upgrade.

ok, is it possible to dual boot a 64 bit and a 32 bit system? Say I wanted to boot 64 bit 7 and 32 bit vista?

I probably would have used that hack but I got it to work as well.

I installed the retail upgrade of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (custom upgrade. aka fresh install) and did not activate. Then I popped in the same upgrade disc from the desktop and hit upgrade and later activated it. I previously had setup the computer name, updates etc and it kept all that from the first install. But of course it took a lot longer than flipping a registry setting.

3 questions (i read through all the posts hope i didnt miss these)

1. Is the 64 bit also 30 bucks?

2. And 2...can I go from win 7 beta 32 bit to the 64 bit upgrade? ------edit I see on the website I can't do this....what would you suggest me doing ( I have a q6600 btw)

3. If I can't is it legal to download win 7 64 bit and use a legal key that I bought?

A clean install is super easy, and with this you can go from 32bit to 64bit. A clean install for me took only about 40mins or so.

How did you do this? I keep getting an error saying that my folder is read only, which isn't true and it craps out on me. Any way to burn this to DVD?

For me I used the download version and ran setup after it extracted everything. From there I clicked Custom install (i think it was custom,) and it ran flawlessly. You can burn it to a dvd and i'm sure it'll work fine from there.

Make sure your firewalls and AV programs are turned off.

also: Has anyone who ordered a disk with the discount received their disk yet? It has been over two weeks since release and I still haven't received it.

anyone able to help on any of my questions? Im trying to buy it asap

1. Yes

2. Do a custom install (aka clean install)

3. I'd assume so as long as you have purchased a key.

Burn what do a dvd? which files should I burn? The entire thing?

I can't even unpack the files. This is the error I get.

Yes. I'm using 32 bit Vista at the moment. I'm trying to install 64 bit 7.

You cannot even do a fresh install this way (I mean, it's possible, but if you're upgrading from 32 to 64, I highly recommend completely wiping the partition and installing from the dvd), you have to go through your bios. What you have to do is create a bootable Windows 7 DVD, and boot from your DVD-drive. Make sure you have your key written down and all your files backed up before doing it.

You need to make sure that all three root files have "Read Only" unchecked in their file properties.

Jesus ****ing christ.

I just bought a Toshiba laptop, which was marketed with a "free Windows 7 upgrade" so I presumed it would be an easy download then.

But no, you need to pay €30 for them to ship over a DVD with some more additional software I don't need. But hey, at least the software's free.

Did that. Same error. I guess I'm just going to have to wait until my dvd arrives.

I have an .edu email now, so I'm probably going to order this. Is there any advantage to paying for the boxed version, or should I just get the digital download?

1) Has anyone even received their physical copy in the mail yet?
2) Has anyone had trouble burning the .iso (digital download version) to DVD and using it?
3) Anyone have any known reason to get Professional over the Premium version?

1. You have to opt in for the physical copy, which is just a disc I think.
2. I burned two copies of 7 for both myself and my fiance. Worked fine for both. Just remember that the download is an .exe file, so you need to unpack the files and then convert it into an .iso file.
3. Windows XP Emulator, Connect to Network Domains, Backing up Data to Hard Drives. Hell, just get Pro. It will make you cooler.

Cool, the ball is in motion. I've selected the download version, 64 bit Pro.

I don't think I've ever actually created a DVD from an iso before. I have some authoring software. What program do you use? Any special trick? Like, do I go in the options and make it bootable or something? Thanks M4d

All the instructions are right here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/...rom-exe-plus-setup1-box-and-setup2-box-files/

Let me know if you have any problems with it.
