OK, I just finished spending 12 or so hours on a paper total only to find out that last third of that time didn't get saved. I hit the 'save' button multiple times over the paper's writing. Word SAID it saved, but when the file got closed ALL OF MY CHANGES were lost. My paper is due tomorrow, and I am wondering if there is ANY way to recover it at all. I am freaking the **** out right now. I am running a search on the off chance it got caught up somewhere on my C: drive, but this laptop is an old POS so I don't know why it would say it saved without actually saving.

In short, how the **** do I recover all that work? There is no god-damn way I could turn in the total shit that my paper was before that four hours of work.

Shit, I think you're best bet is to get some sleep and explain to the teacher what happened. I think you'll have to do it over.

You could also stay home from school and then you'll have 18 hours tomorrow to work on it.

Sometimes I have opened a 2nd copy of it by mistake. This usually happens when I have many things open so I don't notice. So I save all the work I've done and close it or whatever. Then later I notice it still open (but really it's the 2nd copy with no changes) so when I save it and close it, it saves it (and overwrites it) as it was before I made any changes.

Shit just plain sucks, and that's all.

if you aren't buddy/buddy with the teacher explaining it might not do any good.

I had something similar happen about a year ago, I had opened an excel doc from my email and spent like 3 hours working on it. I saved it, closed it, then realized my horrible horrible mistake. I had saved it to whatever temporary file windows opened it to from gmail.

To make matters worse was I knew I could just search for .xlsx files and sort them by date modified to find mine, but the stupid ****ing security settings on the schools computers wouldn't let me do it. Then of course I couldn't ****ing view the file system to manually try and locate my file. I was so pissed off, I had to stay there and do it all over again.

Alright well in about an hour an a half of hauling ass and a really good memory I've salvaged it. Looks like I'll make schedule tomorrow...

**** I am tired.

If you're on Vista / Win7, there's a chance you could use the "previous versions" feature on the file.

Other than that, you're SOL AFAIK.

In the future:

File > Save As > important_document_001.doc

Write for an hour.

File > Save As > important_document_002.doc

Write for an hour.

File > Save As > important_document_003.doc

etc.

Or do it in Google Documents.
