So I downloaded and installed an update for Avast! antivirus. I then restarted my computer like it asked me to.

Upon rebooting my computer, I get this screen saying that my copy of windows or whatever, might not be genuine.

I'm using the Release Candidate of Windows 7 64 bit with my computer, and I haven't seen this issue crop up until just now after this Avast! update.

What's up with this?

I would just validate it and see what happens. When does the RC expire?

I didn't see an option there to validate it. So I simply told it to remind me later.

RC expires like... June 1. However, it will start switching off every 2 hours starting March 1... so for me it's effectively expired on March 1.

I thought the RC has expired and Win7 is released? What's going on?

The release candidate is available in five languages and will expire on June 1, 2010, with shutdowns every two hours starting March 1, 2010.[29] Microsoft stated that Windows 7 would be released to the general public on October 22, 2009.

Oh, I see. I kept thinking 09.
So, is it just in the US that the RC expired on June 09, or the RC expires on June 2010 everywhere?

Sorry for the hijack.

I'm not really sure dude.

You got Microsoft software for free? I am reporting you to the FBI!

What? No. The RC isnt expired anywhere yet.

The RC had an earlier expiration date but was changed to a later date so you can use it even longer (the March/June date above).

try right clicking Computer, go to Properties and at the bottom it will show your product key and hopefully a link to Validate. If not that's your problem....you didn't enter a product key. We did this to all our Win 7 computers at work then one day they all got an update and did just this.

It already says my Windows is Activated, and no link to Validate.

Must have been some sort of weird fluke from the antivirus update that it caused that.

So you're not getting the message anymore?

Well, I got it the once, shortly before I made this thread. I was not sure how often I would be getting it, like if it was every time I reset the computer, or after a couple of days, or what.

But several computer restarts since then, and I haven't received it again... which makes me think it was some sort of anomaly.
