Hello,

I'm new here, I have a store bought copy of half life 2... I'm wanting to install it on my new windows X64 pro machine... I keep getting error 1719 windows installer can't work... or something like that... i've done a whole lot of diffrent things to try and get it to work... can't find anything to get it to work... anyone else have this prob? or fix it? or know where/how to download the x64 version that was released?

Woah that is indeed quite a problem :O
I'll see if I can find a 64-bit version of Steam somewhere

Nope. Download Steam here:
http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow

Then, make yourself an account and then come back here for further instructions (You won't be able to change the name of the account so make sure that that account name is what you want)

I've got Steam downloaded and runing...

I tried to enter in my CD key, but it says i have to have it installed.... but i can't do that becouse of the 1791 error... stupid X64

Its too early for buying XP 64 version if you intend to use it as gamer machine, but I do believe VALVe did release 64-bit HL2 or an update...
Either way Beerdude is the File-planet here, if he cant find it. there is probably none.
On the meant time see if your XP 64 has program compatibility option like normal XPs have. (this how we do in 32-bit XP) Right-click HL2 icon, property, compatibility and hopefully there will be an option for running HL2 in 32-Bit.

Good Luck.

yea i do have that option.... but it still brings the error up when i try and install....

And you did upgrade HL2, Validated, Your system meets the minimum system requirements, updated video and sound card drivers, Disk defrag, and have the legitimate HL2 copy?
Your problem comes down to compatibility issues and you have run HL2 in 32-bit version of Windows unless you have the patch.

Its just way too early for 64. Way too early.

yes, I do meet/surpase the min req for the game... yes i have a legit 100% legal bought at best buy copy.... brand new harddrive, was just formated days ago....

yea i realize it's early for 64... thats why I run both... I just want to see if it's better on x64... but i'm having prob installing...

I think HL2 is released as a 32Bit software and needs to be patched/upgraded by VALVe to 64bit compatible software before it even lets you run the HL2 installer or setup.exe/autorun.exe file. I think VALVe did release the 64bit update as I saw something similar to that in Steam news. here http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&id=496
But my theory here stands to be corrected if needs to.

yea, but where the F%^&* do i download it?

Steam will download the HL2 SP/LC 64bit upgrade automatically if it finds you have a 64bit chip and OS.

But he can't even install HL2 :|

This is probably fixed now but for people who get this error now I'll post how to fix it, because I got it today and it was quite annoying

Start -> Run <enter>
type the following line and click OK:

C:\windows\syswow64 msiexec /regserver
