just threw my old mobo and cpu into my buddies comp
got the bare necessities hooked up.. 1 hdd, 1 stick of ram, graphics etc
when we run windows setup to format and do a fresh install, it comes up with the error "the file mountmgr.sys is corrupted" and it forces us to restart
i doubt that anything on the windows cd is messed cause i used it less than a week ago to format and install on my own comp
did an extensive google search for this error and it came up with very little relevant info
bios is set to default
any help would be muchg appreciated, thanks

amd barton 2800+
msi mobo via cs
fujitsu 40gb hdd

possible to try the CD on another computer, it might be your harddrive

Well....you should go to microsoft.com and not a half-life 2 site. Here is a link I found on Microsoft.com. It's a long one.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434/en-us

Make sure there are no other cds, floppys or flash drives in. Also make sure the data cord is plugged in all the way.

windows wont even boot up, safe mode or not
it always gets a blue screen error, perhaps cause its running on a new motherboard
we tried putting the HD in my comp and formatting from there
format went well but it had trouble copying over 3 system files during the windows installation(skipped them)
swapped it back into the other comp and its still messed

Ahh new HD. Yep you have to reformat. When you change the chipset on the mobo your old installation can't read it.

exactly, thats why we're forced to format and reinstall but it cant get passed the beginning stages
"the file mountmgr.sys is corrupt" press any key to restart etc etc

Just a quick question, were you upgrading from an older version of windows or installing a brand new copy on the HD? You might want to follow these directions.

when i switched motherboard it would freeze at the winxp load screen and i could only enter through safemode so you have to format

apparently you guys arent following me completely
when i boot from the windows cd... and try to enter the area where you format the drive and then proceed to install windows, it comes up with the error 'mountmgr.sys is corrupt' press any key to restart
i cant format, install windows or even boot up in safe mode!!!

If you can see if another cd works. Or try another disk drive. Also try to un plug as much as you can or fiddle around with BIOS. Sometimes plugged in devices...or cd's/floppy disk will interfere. That or you have a setting in BIOS which is causing it to read differently.
