I just reformatted today and put on xp pro.

I seem to be having some trouble and I hope you can help:

When I boot up, after the windows loading screen, I get a black screen w/out anthing on it for about 30 seconds before the choose user screen comes up. Is this normal?

And when I finally get to the choose user screen the mouse is frozen. I can select the user and login via the keyboard and then I can unplug the mouse and plug it back in which will remedy the problem. But how do I get it to work normally? It's a USB mouse and I think that may be causing the problem since when I plug in a pen drive I says that I have a high speed device on a low speed port even though I've installed all the drivers.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Check to see if your USB ports are configured right in the BIOS.

Hmmm,

how?

I have Award

btw, it worked perfectly in win 2k

This is what I found on the net.
--------------------------
There are certain situations when it may be necessary to alter the system BIOS settings of the PC when using USB equipment:

Enabling on-board USB. It is possible that the on-board USB needs to be enabled via a BIOS setting, and it is currently disabled.
Using a USB Host Adapter. If you are using a USB host adapter, and the systemboard of your PC also has a USB host adapter chipset on it which you are not using, it may be necessary to adjust the setup of, or disable, the systemboard USB chipset. This will enable Windows to correctly allocate resources to the appropriate devices.
Allocating Resources. If you are experiencing problems with resource clashes you may wish to disable certain resources which were previously used by devices attached to the USB. For example, serial and parallel ports which were previously occupied by mice, printers, scanners, modems, etc. can be disabled to free resources if they are required elsewhere, such as by a USB Host adapter card.

I turned off usb mouse support in the bios but it didn't do any good.

I looked for some other settings that would apply but didn't find any.

lol you dont want to turn it off becuase then its not going to work at all. Try using the green converter that came with your mouse that connects into the PS2 port or whatever it is called. Then connect the other end to your mouse. It could just be you didnt install the software that came with your mouse.

:bounce: ok, I was thinking of doing that but I didn't bother after I learned you could just unplug and then plug back in.

I'm also thinking of reformatting again just to make sure. It wouldn't heart.

btw, is the 30-40 sec black screen normal?

edit: I'm going to reformat so it'll be awhile.

No it isn't. I have seen some of the school machines that run 2k here do it but so far I can't see anything wrong.

edit: bloody slow ass school network made me doublepost.

What are your system specs? I can only assume u fulfill the minimum sys. requirements, in which the blank screen would NOT be normal.

I have a family computer that my parents use and i installes Xp pro on it and it boots up in under 20 seconds from the second you press the button untill your in your desktop able to open programs. And the system in a peice of crap p2 450 mhz 384 ram and and 60gig harddrive.

On windows XP Pro you should get that 20-30 second screen, but normally it's not blank it is usually the startup progress bar boot screen... maybe this is just corrupted when you installed it... However, if the machines working fine I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Ok, I've reformatted and at first everything was working fine. That is until, get this, the SOUND drivers were installed. They screwed everything up. The mouse was working like it was supposed to until windows automatically reinstalled the drivers that I uninstalled. I just recently updated via windowsupdate.com and it hasn't seemed to help.

if windows automatically reinstalled drivers you uninstalled, then you dont have better drivers installed. but yeah what are your specs

If you just reinstalled make sure you update to SP1. That will get rid of the message about High speed device in USB. Service Pack 1 has USB2.

If you have a device that windows sees, it will need drivers. If you do not supply the drivers completely and it has it's own it will install those. Update the sound drivers and chipset drivers from both manufactures websites. Or disable that device.

AMD Athlon 2700+
512 pc 2700 RAM
40 Gig HD
Nvidia GForce 4 mx440 128mb video card
Aopen Sound Card
usb mouse. . .etc

I installed some drivers that weren't from the maufacturer and they will work for the 2.1 speakers but the extra 2 speakers I had plugged in won't work. I want to install the regular drivers but whenever I do the problems come back. Weird startup and no initall mouse support.
