I'm looking for cheap wireless router that is suitable for online gaming/xbox live. Can anyone recommend me one?

A friend of mine just bought a Linksys router that seems to be fine. He based on his decision when he found out Netgear is NOT compatible

Linksys makes some good 10mbps routers for a good price...Get a WRT54G...

Get a WRT54GL. I forget what the L stands for (I'm almost positive it means it's Linux-enabled), and the basic difference is that it has either 2 or 4 times the flash memory of the 54G model.

This is very important, because this extra memory space allows you to upgrade the firmware to freeware builds that are quite honestly leagues ahead of the default Linksys software. I use DD-WRT freeware on my 54GL, and it offers many times more functionality than the Linksys software.

If you don't plan on flashing the firmware, the 54G will do just fine. They run for around $40-55.

About this WRT54GL, does it drop the signal frequently or reboots itself automatically?

My WRT54G works amazingly with my both my computers,ps2 and my friends handhelds(DS,and PSP). The network setup was extremely easy, and its only $50 on Newegg.com . My signal occasionally drops, but usually jumps right back.I dont think theres such as thing as a wireless router that doesnt loose signal occasionally. But definetly a must have if your still running hundreds of feet of CATV cable all over your house.

Last question. I'm planning to put the wireless router in my basement (where both my PC and game consoles are). You think the connection will be ok? Also I've heard that ringing of wireless phone would make the signal drop.

depends on where ur computers are....if they are all near eachother it wont be a problem....

The wireless phones might cause interference - if they do, go into the router settings and change the broadcast channel.

Keeping the router in the basement should be alright... You'll probably have a really weak signal if you're going through more than one floor or wall though. In which case, the GL might be a better choice, since DD-WRT allows you to boost the signal and overclock your router :P
