Yesterday, my keyboard decided to take a taste of my ice tea. To be exact, it drank the entire glass and then started doing funk-a-delic things on me. The letter "p" did spell check in Microsoft word while the "enter" button save a document. I thought it was time to buy a new keyboard. :|

I used this excuse to buy the Logitech Cordless MX Duo that includes an awesome wireless keyboard, but more importantly the MX 700 mouse.

I have always been a cheap mouse user. The cheaper the better. My previous mouse was a $10 logitech generic wheelmouse, and I thought that was more than enough for games. I was wrong.

After spending a half an hour getting used to it in UT2K4, I can say that it was worth every penny of it. I'm a twitch, reflex shooter at heart and its nice to know I can nail head shots much easier than before. Needed only 20 minutes of practice before everything felt second nature to me. That would have took much longer if I still was using 'Ole faithful'.

Moral of the story? If you are a cheap mouse user like I was, get off your lazy duff and buy an MX 700. It's amazing.

One question - on my old mouse, I was able to press down the mouse wheel for a faster scroll. The MX 700 doesn't do that and the control panel doesn't have anything about it. Any fixes?

im like you a cheap mouse user..mines not even brand name or optical
im building my first comp right now and im planning to get a a mx duo, or should i stick to your advice and get a mx700

MX Duo includes the MX700. Best of all, you can find the Duo for the same price as the mouse standalone. So, by all means, buy the Duo! You WON'T regret it. I have an MX700 myself, great mouse.

I got my brother the Duo for his birthday this year, and it was a great keyboard/mouse erm, duo.

I've become a sort of Logitech fan these days.. I have loads of Logitech hardware now, since it's high quality and snazzy :D

Get It! Get It! Get It!

i tend not to like the wireless/cordless keyboards and mice.
i am currently using Logitech's MX500 mouse.. hmm.. i don't know the difference between the MX700 and the MX500 besides the wireless/cordless thing tho :p

That's because there is no difference besides it being wireless :P

Let it be known that, even though it IS wireless, it's amazing; no lag, great resolution, etc etc.. better than my Intellimouse Optical, which I used for 3 years.. optical, microsoft and 5 buttons that was.. so, a switch to a wireless mouse was kinda odd, but I'm happy.. great great mouse :)

I have not installed the Logitech drivers or software on the CD but my MX700 has the wheel scroll that you are talking about. Press the wheel button and it comes up with the up/down arrows and you drag your mouse above or below.

Enjoy!

I installed the drivers. I'm doomed.

*sob*

Or I could uninstall them. I thought the drivers were important for the accuracy of the MX 700. I'll check that out in the morning.

Don't! Just change the middle button to "Middle Button" as opposed to Universal Scroll in the mouse control panel.. problem solved :)

i don't like batteries.. :(
mainly because they remind me of the times where my TV remote stopped working.. which annoyed the hell out of me
so um.. yeah.. wireless/cordless items = not so fond memories for meh :(

There IS another difference. Haven't you noticed the sensor is on the right side of the mouse, not centered?

To those who hates the blue batts that came with the mx700, you could find energizer's rechargables, gotta check the capacity of the batt tho.. it's the notice on the underside of the batt cover, those energizer batts are like half the weight of the blue ones. But still makes it heavier than MX500 :(

... That's like the scroll button on my IntelliMouse Optical right? It works by either turning it up/down or pressing it and then moving the mouse upwards or downwards to scroll a page. Very handy, also love my sidebuttons. Ownz for games.

Wow, the MX1000 DOES look nice.. ah well, I've only had my mouse for about 7 months now, so it's still got a long life left

Anyhow, anyone worried about batteries on the MX700 shouldn't worry either, it's got a charger base.

As for the sensor being positioned differently, I never knew that, as I've never used an MX500/510 :O

Why don't you buy the MX1000 Laser mouse ? It comes with a charger and lasts for days. A couple of minutes charging gives you a few more hours playing. That's definately my next mouse.

a review here.

I only bought the MX Duo because I needed a keyboard and it *conviently* included a mouse. Unless the MX1000 comes with a free keyboard, I wouldn't get it.

I missed your post, thanks for the fix. It's quite nice to have three different scolling speeds.

Now I will continue my evil plans to take over the world! :dork: Anybody wish to join me as my evil minion? I offer great benefits.

dudes, does it really make a difference in games with a damn $40 mouse? ive got a $10 optical logitech mouse with 2 buttons and a scroll wheel and its smooth as hell and works pretty good in games.

You never know what you're missing out on until you use something better.

i dont have $40 for a mouse, id rather use that to get a better mobo, or ram, then i am getting in two weeks.

Exactly. I had always used cheap mice until I bought my Intelli3 and my fUnc 1030 mousepad. And what a difference it was indeed.

so will it really make a difference? i mean im really good at CS with this mouse, how much better can it be?

basically, what are the diff's. between regular optical mouses and really good ones? whats the advantage.

Just the precision when you are aiming. It is hard to describe, but there is a tangible difference with using the MX 700. It won't make you better in computer games if you suck at them, but they give you extra control that can take you to the next level. Not to mention it is an awesome mouse for surfing the web (through its extra buttons and better accuracy).

According to my box, the MX 700 has

Image Processing - 4.7 megapixels/sec
Resolution - 800 dpi
Acceleration - 10 g
Speed - 40 inches/sec

The increasing popularity of large 17 and 19-inch monitors has created a problem for mouse users. The large screen settings used with these monitors mean the mouse must be moved farther than normal to point at something across the screen. The problem is, large movements can be physically uncomfortable.

Most optical mice have a resolution of 400 DPI (Dots Per Inch), meaning that without software compensation, the cursor will move 400 pixels across the screen for every inch the mouse is moved on the desktop. For small screen settings this is fine, but for large settings it means the mouse must be moved abnormally far.

To compensate for this, mouse software drivers include speed and acceleration controls (accessed in the mouse properties dialog) to amplify how far the cursor moves in response to how fast the mouse is moved.

For example, these controls could be set so when the mouse is moved slowly across the table for one inch, the cursor will move 400 pixels across the screen. As the mouse is moved faster, cursor movement will be increasingly magnified up to the point where it will travel 800 pixels or more per inch of mouse movement.

The problem with this is, as the settings are increased, pointing accuracy is decreased and the cursor becomes more difficult to control. In the example above, when the mouse is moved quickly for one inch, the cursor effectively skips every other pixel in order to travel a screen distance of 800 pixels. Thus pointing accuracy is reduced.

Logitech's MX Optical Engine resolution is 800 DPI, twice that of most competitors' optical sensors. This allows smoother, more accurate cursor control with large screens while minimizing the amount of left-and-right hand motion. By default, the cursor is also easy to control with smaller screen sizes, and Logitech's software enables users to adjust the responsiveness of the cursor to suit their individual preferences.

I wonder if higher is always better. Like is a 900 or 1000 automatically better than a 700? And I've also heard some very good things about the MX510.

I'm thinking of getting a new mouse too, I now have a 1,5 year old Logitec Optical Cordless mouse, works fine, but there's better.
