Because [mainstream] rap consists of horribly inane lyrics coupled with poor English grammar.
At least acapella and classical require musical knowledge, unlike 50 Cent. Yes, there is some rap that's good, that actually was spent time on, but most of the crap you hear on radio stations sucks.
Then we have this nu-metal crap. It used to be that you had to have talent to get a record deal, now everyone can get one. Why does everything sound the same? Of course, there are some GREAT modern artists, but you listen to all these new bands on your rock music stations... Doubledrive, Lo-Pro, 3 Days Grace, Fall out boy, Yellowcard, Mudvayne, Deftones, etc. etc. All these people sound alike, they have one catchy riff and that's all they build on. At least bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest weren't BORING and sounded the same!
Some people just laugh and go, "Oh you people just can't appreciate these artists' music." No, I do like a lot of modern artists, but I like ones that have musical talent. I listen to a lot of non-mainstream metal but I also listen to a lot of "mainstream" music too, and not just metal, I listen to everything from blues to classical to death metal.
It's not that there weren't crap artists way back when too, but nowadays ANYONE can put their music places. And you know what? Maybe it's just taste. We went through disco, we went through rock and roll, I guess now we're going through nu-metal. However, lately I've been seeing a rise in mainstream artists who are coming through with older-sounding music and that's becoming popular.
God knows, it seems like today everyone wants the top music video instead of being musical.
