I have seen a few comments and threads about the hardware specs for HL2, but I havn't seen any "this is the specs you need to run the game fine".

I know about the minimum specs (1200 MHz) and Gabe's recomended specs (2400 MHZ), but I don't see Gabe's comments to be the "you don't need more than this"-specs but as minimum specs for the game to be playable.
In short terms: What do i need to play the game in High but not in the Extra high (like Doom 3).
(I ame thinking about the stress-test and CS:S as indicator for HL2 graphics).

Sory if this has been posted 1000 times and bla bla bla, but the Search-thing never works for me...

ATI 9800 XT or ATI x800 XT/pro/nivida 6800
512 ram
2.4 ghz or higher

And thats what I ame going to need if I want to play HL2 almost perfectley? (like I say in my post above)

no, just something like a 9800pro, and a 2.4ghz chip. That will more than render it

Or just to mention it, a AMD 64 bit on 2 ghz will do fine too since it works as good as a p4 3 ghz :)

I can play CS:Source comfortably using a Sempron 2600+, 512MB Ram and a GeForce FX5600. I upped the memory to a GB the other day and this has given me an additional boost. I must add that it doesn't look fabulous though, but plays smoothly enough, which is key for on-line.

That's my second PC (in the lounge - connected to a 32" widescreen TV :) ) my main PC is a 3Ghz Intel rig with a 9800Pro, soon to be XT PE or similar, and that, well, it just runs like a dream, and looks great too.

(lol @ czrsink's avatar)

With a 9800pro you can set all details to high, run at 1024, and have a little bit of AA and AF and have it be pretty smooth. A 9700 or 9600 can still run HL2 fine but the visuals wont be quite as good.

Still its all relative. It will still look better with a x800 or 6800, of course.. you'll get higher rez, more AA and AF, and more frames. damn rich punks. :) I'm pretty happy ith my 9800 pro tho.

i have a x800 pro, 3000+ amd 64, and a gig of ram, it runs at 35 fps on recommonded spec. does anyone else have this problem?

because i currently have the worst vid card available (Sapphire ATi Radeon 9600 256MB) im thinking on blowing a lot of cash for something decent (ATi X800 Platinum 512MB *when released*) just for laughs and for my gaming needs. (or, if i'm desperate enough, wait till the X850 releases)

to run the game half decent id prolly say:

AMD Athlon 2600+ or P4 2.6 ghz
512mb-1GB ram
ATI Radeon 9600XT or Geforce 5700

Those specs should alteast run the game 800*600 Max settings.and anything above that would help it run at 1024*768.

Mutt, that doesn't sound at all right. Something is clearly wrong in your setup there...

It sounds like something is being throttled somewhere...have you checked your motherboard BIOS settings, or does anything look unusual in you ATi Control Panel?

The key to stutter-free performance will be 1gig of ram, a strong cpu and i midrange dx9 graphiccard from Ati (read: 9600pro-xt)

to play hl2 fine you want at least a 9500, anything above that will be swell.

i'm guesisng my cpu is a bit below "fine" It's a 1..8ghz p4. :(

Sounds about right, that's my set up 'cept a 9800 pro, I'm hoping for 1024*768 and stuff on medium, maybe AA at low

Right, there's no need to have a 9800 Pro to play on 'high' settings... a 9500/9600 can do it just fine.

From my own testing I have to agree with this.

Anything less would be like pouring paint thinner on the Mona Lisa,
yeah you can look at the tag on teh wall and it says Mona Lisa, and you can tell all your friends you went to see it but did you really see it the way the artist intended?

PPl have to understand that what is driving the market is hardware, without ppl putting money into it devs have no reason to put effort into making next gen games, if they have no cust with the hardware to run the game they have nothing. It's a cycle :/. Yeah they have to write for lesser hardware paths but it's not because they want to, it's because they have to meet a cross section of gamers(customers).

youl be fine on 1024*768 on high probably with no AA im guessing

i got 1.7 p4, 786 mb ddr, 9800pro 128mb, and i run on 1024x786 most shadows on OK, reflections worst, models+effects on med/low, no aa/af, 30-50 fps depending on map, players server..

i put it all on full, looked great, just the odd flicker, and 20-30 fps depending again on server, map, players etc, just goes to show....

Erm... CS.S isn't that great a judge on what HL2 will play like...
For instance, I have a 1700+ @1800+ w768Mb SD PC133 ram, and a gf4Ti4600 and I can play CS.S with every setting maxed out (it even recommends them all to be bar water reflections, which I force on anyway) at 1600x1200 and its playable, about 23fps. I play at 1280x1024 for a bit more smoothness 35fps.
But I don't expect to play HL2 on even 1024x768 with medium settings, let alone the higher reses and settings I use in CS.S.
(However, that aside, CS.S is probably still the best method to judge HL2 performance with, especialy the stress test, just don't take it as gold or anything)
