I recently got the star wars galaxies trial, and i must say i find it rather poor. the game is based on solid foundations with a good class based system... but after that it fails to deliver. I really, REALLY want to craft stuff. i want to craft stuff and i want to kill things. that is fun. But SWG doesnt let you do both... only one, and so i chose to be an artisan and craft weapons and things. But then i die when i enter a fight with a frog. so much for artisan.

But it gets even worse when i actually get to craft things... i find out that there are four weapons to craft from the start, and bugger all to do after this... id say there are less than 20 weapons in the game, which is poor. Not only this... but all the planets look really boring, with the cities being SUPER DULL. the trial has put me off galaxies forever, though it did do one thing right....

it showed me the potential of MMORPGs.

Although i couldnt do much in SWG, i could imagine the things that i would like to do. i want to be able to have a fight with a frog and win, and i want to be able to craft something that i made, not some crappy weapon blueprint that was pre-set by some guys at SOE.

Then i read an article in PCgamer about WOW. i thought wow, this looks good! where can i learn more? then i watched the E3 trailer. it blew me away... the game looked decent... the graphics were origonal and the landscapes unique (as in style with the warcraft games) and there was no sand planet. which was a big relief.

But theres more... a whole website more... visit www.blizzard.com/wow for one of the most detailed sites you have ever seen... it answered ALL of my questioned, ans satisfied my thirst for info.

And it is amazing how much better WOW is than other MMORPGs (well SWG, as that is the only one i have played ;) ). Not only that, but blizzard are actually trying to make a well balanced, FUN MMORPG based on... and this is the important bit... experience. these arent some guys who suddenly decide htey want to have a go at a different genre, these are guys that have spent years playing MMORPGs and filtering out the good from the bad.

heres some examples. remember what i was saying about SWG not letting you do all thoe things? well in WOW you can do it all. You pick a class... warrior, mage etc. but DONT chose what you want to do. then while playing through the game you can pick "secondary" skills that apply to what you can do, such as crafting, catering, horse rider or just focusing on slaying the baddies. so you have a combat/ mage class, followed by varios skills that allow you to do what you want. FINALLY! i can collect recorces without being killed by frogs!!!

Not only that, but you can customise what you make. want a decent sword? There are more than just the basic "long sword" and "heavy sword" etc... you can make a long sword, that has increased attack and power, then enchant it with fire so that it glows read and causes fire damage. then you can sell it for a tidy profit.

seriosly, if you have any intrest in WOW at all, LOOK ON THE WEBSITE!!! read the faq and discover what i mean!!! this is a VERY promising title!!!

discuss!!! discuss!!!

if you only do one thing in this thread, click this link!!http://www.blizzard.com/wow/

The best crafters in SWG had alts, some had a tree or two in rifleman. The problem is that in a fourteen day trial you'll never be able to master anything if it's your fist time playing. The uber crafter on the Bria server had FIVE alts, that's six accounts.

Anyhooo, I am also looking forward to WoW. But I'm afraid the B.Net community will ruin everything with loot camping and abusive language.

I've only played Planetside when it comes to MRPGs, and this looks a lot better.

trust me, if you read the website you will see how they plan to stop this. For a start i dont think you can actually steal loot in the first place, with the killer gaining all the treasures or a group gaining one item each / a share of exp. plus with the really BIG monsters each group has its own private deoungeon, that no-one but that group and anyone they chose can enter.

im still not sure whether im going to get an mmorpg yet though... paying monthly isnt my thing :|

mmorpgs = yawn

I started my first MMORPG about a year ago and it only lasted for the free month before I got bored. Since then I have tried several other MMORPGs and they have all lasted for only the free month before they got boring. I have given up on them and have decided they aren't worth the time nor the money.

Actually I read up on the beta forums every other day Suicide42. The thing is since only the beta testers can post there, the community seems fine for now. And instanced dungeons solve a part of the problem but what about everything that's in the open? gold veins, herbs, monsters...

same, except the longest I have ever stayed interested in an MMORPG was about 2 days \:

I have a question, will this game force you to become part of a group to play, like FFXI, or can I play alone. I hated being part of a group, I perfer soloing because I think it's more fun.

you know, you CAN master 2 professions.

but anyway, i think wow looks awesome. i dont think i could play both swg and wow at once, so im going to pick one. i may try out the free month of wow, since it does look really good. blizzard is damn good at making games.

I dunno if I got into the WoW beta because I never check my e-mail lol.

/applauds for Pressure ^_^

The only MMO's that slightly interested me are Guild Wars (because it's free) and Middle-Earth Online, since I'm such an LotR freak.
I used to think SWG is cool, but it turned out not to appeal as much, had a much better time with KotOR.

in SWG you can master a whole load of proffessions... on the free trial i am every single one of the starting classes exept for brawler. The thing is i still have crap stats and can get killed by frogs... and i know that you can change your stats, but this costs loads :/

and ye, i definately agree that blizzard are great at making games. compare SWG to WOW footage... SWG has 11 areas for each planet, and each area is copy + pasted over a huge map, with crappy cities that ALL LOOK THE SAME scattered everywhere. even the quests are dull and boring, but from what i heard WOW is the opposite.

Anyone in this forum actually get to play in the WoW beta?

i dotn think so but im definately gonna try and get in the open beta... couldnt get into the closed beta as im british ;(

um.. maybe if you tried actually gaining some skills in ONE profession instead of having like 4 which you suck at. and you should be able to kill 'frogs' with any one of those classes.

actually im quite good now.. i posted that at the start of my trial  Its actually really easy to level up on 4 aspects at once, like for killing a creature i get marksman exp, combat exp. and scouting exp. for taking its hide. then while going from point A to B ill search and harvest rescources.

but the thing about galaxies is there are about 5 monster types per planet and all the planets look EXACTLY the same.. while WOW looks really bright and colourful. dont get me wrong, i think SWG is great but i think WOW is generally brighter, better and more fun... but ill have to wait untill i play the game to determine that, i guess.

man i want to get into the open beta SO BLOODY much...

So is this a World of Warcraft thread or a SWG thread? :p
neither.. its a SWG vs. WOW thread!!! the final is tonite @ 9!!!

go WOW!! go WOW!!

The e3 vid was great \o/

This could be the first mmorpg I get into :)

SWG drew me in with all the so called features it had but when I got it I noticed they weren't what I thought they were going to be. The game turned out to be pretty dull because these features weren't a big part of the game. That is why I tend to shy away from MMORPGs because they tend to make things seem better than they are to get you to buy the game.

I have a friend who got into the beta and doesn't play anymore so he's gonna let me use it.

kewl, make sure to inform us

That's exactly how I feel and why I left SWG.
