I'm at the moment torn between getting the Orange Box at a discount or Enemy Territory: Quake Wars which is already out.

If I buy the OB, how will I know if I'll even be able to play TF2 at a reasonable FPS? I mean, does it require the same sys-req as HL2, or more?

I really, really would like to play the beta of TF2 if I can, but I think I'd rather wait until the official release date, or just before. Plus, if I buy now, I won't even be able to play the other games at all.

Advice, please?

If you can run HL2 and CS:S then you should be able to run TF2 (The requirements are just a little bit higher). I would go for the OB, not only you get a little bit of a discount, but you get to pack in a few hours of TF2.

I wasn't sure whether to buy the Orange Box, thought it looked a bit meh, but I caved in...

Been playing TF2 for hours, its awsome, really doesn't get old. Pureee fun!

Buy it!

If you are already planning on buying it over Steam then there is no point in waiting, you get the pre-order discount, Peggle Extreme (a plus for some) and get to play TF2 (with barely a week left hardly anything is going to change between now and the 'official' release).

Unless, of course, you can't meet the minimum requirements

Minimum: 1.7 GHz Processor, 512MB RAM, DirectX? 8 level Graphics Card, Windows? Vista/XP/2000, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection

The major thing about all the OB games is that they no longer support DirectX 7 cards. So if you're one of those thousands who were tricked into buying a Geforce4 MX years ago, you're no longer supported.

Get Orange Box over ET:QW for sure, and you can almost surely run TF2.

Well, I was going to get ET:QW anyway, but that would be by mail order, and I wouldn't get it for a few days anyway. But if I go for the OB, I'd be able to play almost immediately!

OK, two more questions:

1. I already have HL2 and HL2:E1, what do I do with those old games? Use the "gift" idea?
2. $44.95? That would be at least ?22.50, wouldn't it? Any extra charges I should know about?

Lastly, there seems to be a separate price for TF2, can I get it separately?

Just get the OB. You will not be disappointed.

Buy it. It's an amazing deal and you get to play TF2 now.

TF2 is awesome-sechs in an exploding ninja box of pwnage, btw.

I'd just just buy it...no extra charges, and you get HL2 HL2Ep1 HL2 Ep2 Portal and TF2...so it's not that bad of a deal. As of now, though, you can't just buy TF2 and play it now.

Tax. Cost me ?26.

Have you played the Quake Wars demo to make sure that game is for you? I tried it out but it wasn't my type of game (spawn and run around for 5 minutes looking for someone to kill).

TF2 is worth the price of the OB by itselt IMO.

I'm not buying the Orange Box. I don't want to buy HL2 (a game I don't even like) three times as of now.

I'm gonna wait until TF2 is actually out, then buy it separately.

So, $50 for Enemy Territory (one game), or $45 for three new games (and two old ones which you can give to a friend). Less money, more games, and TF2 is WAY better than ETQW.

I bought it last night and it's totally awesome.

It's not like paying 45 bucks for a multiplayer game that alone probably should cost 30 bucks, then an episode of a game for another 10-20, then another puzzle game that could sell for 10-20 as well. I don't know, I think 45 is a steal. It's like HL2/Ep1 are free.

If you're talking OB vs. ETQW, I'd say go for the OB. If it's ETQW vs. TF2 I'd probably say go ETQW. TF2 is only shipping with those 6 maps in the demo, and apart from Hydro they can get a little grating. I'm not sure how many maps ETQW is shipping with, but the playstyle and massive maps allow for more strategy so I think replayability is higher.

If you're getting both anyway then for the moment get the OB because the first 50 hours of TF2 are great.

I'd have to say, yeah it's only shipping with that many, but we already have a couple custom maps out for TF2, and it's not released yet! It's only a matter of time before the map making scene booms, and the original maps are not alone in the rotation.

After Tax it's like 26 quid. Certainly OB is the one to get. TF2 is an absolute pleasure to play, and worth the price alone. Out of the 6 maps I'd say Fort is the worst tbh because it tends to get very stagnated at times whereas the others aren't so. Worth getting now rather than at retail? Well in some ways you've missed the boat in terms of getting the jump on some players. The first day of beta everyone was like 'WTF' 'Where do I go' 'Medic!!' where as now people are more canny and know the maps and more importantly the murder spots, but you'd still have the jump on the retail crowd and that would be no bad thing. I'm expecting the first few days or retail are going to be a big pwnfest, especially for dirty engineers.

You're not buying HL2 with the orange box. You are buying TF2, Portal, and Episode 2. The other two games you refer to are freebies that come with the box. Valve really bungled the marketing on this because few people seem to get it.

Regardless, TF2 will cost you $30 US by itself and I feel it is quite worth that price.

Then why the **** did you make the thread?

Fine, go buy Quake Wars... I hope you enjoy mediocrity.

Why would you want to buy a half assed bf 2 mod instead of purchasing 5(3)games for one measly price of 45 bucks?
I also do not see the logic in purchasing one game for $30 instead of 3 for $45.

Oh, OK, you've all twisted my arm. Besides, I'll be getting some more cash on Saturday, which means I'll still be able to pre-purchase OB and get my 50 hours of TF2 anyway. And there is extra value in getting the other two. I'd like to see what happens in the countryside in Episode 2, and I'm curious about this Portal, which in my mind at the moment is a copy of Prey - I hope to change that opinion.

And sorry, I thought I was paying for HL2 and Ep1 all over again. So, they've finally become "free", have they?

BTW, I did yesterday buy ET:QW, and it only cost me ?18 ($36?) on www.play.com. I looked around town and it was on sale for ?30 ($60?), which I would never pay for a game.

Portal is in no way a copy of Prey. The only thing they have in common is that they have portals. Portal is a puzzle game, Prey is a generic shooter. In Portal you can manipulate portals, in Prey all of the portals are static.

I'm not going to lie, I'm addicted to that stupid unicorn game that came with it. So buy it, its well worth it.

Release dates:

Battlefield 1942 - September 2002
Wolfenstein: Enemy Teritory - May 2003

QW:ET is the sequel to W:ET, which was in development at the same time as BF1942 (released 8 months later - hardly enough time for a full development cycle of a game of its proportions). A lot of people would argue W:ET was a superior game to BF1942.

BF2 mod, my arse.

Oh, the irony! As I said, I ordered ET:QW and also UT2004 off eBay, and now because of the postal strikes, neither of those is going to come first. Looks like TF2 will be first off the bat in my new trio of online games.

Oh lol. Internet distribution FTW.

for the win ^

lol postal strikes. there all going to go on a killing rampage because all they deliver now is junk mail!!

How much disk space does TF2 actually take up? I seem to be having an age downloading it, it's so slow.

Please, someone respond. My download speed is so slow it seems to be stopping altogether. Only by double-clicking on the link then cancelling does it seem to start downloading again.

Steam is always like that. Oh, and you better not have dial-up or anything. You'll be screwed.

I have 4mb Broadband, and it's still as slow as $hit. Besides, Steam is NOT always like that. I've been told it's because so many people are trying to download TF2 that it's so slow.

Maybe I should wait until a couple of weeks later. :frown:

I have a few TF2 cache files in the steam folder. About 2.5GB worth. I'm pretty sure they download as a smaller compressed file though.

According to my steamapps folder TF2 + Source 2007 = 3.84GB

Looks like there is enough bandwidth so you should be getting reasonable speeds.
