Hi
I have the following system

Xp3000 333fsb
512mb ram
Radeon 9700 Pro 128meg

I like to run HL2 high and smooth (excluding aa, and v-sync as i never use that) and I also like to run CS source high and smooth.

I am thinking of upgrading my gfx card to a radeon 9800 xt 256mb... I know its not a massive leap as I cant afford anything higher like a a x800 but i am thinking it still give me a few FPS boost like 10 or so.. for online gaming and to play it smoother.

what you think? I am really keen on this idea to get HL2 running the best i want.

Do you really think 10 FPS extra is worth that much money for a new card? :S

I think a 9800 Pro would be very good for HL2, as for how much better an XT is i dont know.

You should have posted this in Hardware Software forum also, a mod should move it soon.

For pretty much the same price you can get an x800pro, which has almost double the performance.

I'm keeping my 9800 Pro 128, i'm happy with it for now :)

I'm planning on running almost everything on high

im thinking of upgrading my 9500 to 9800 soon. but yeah, xt prices jstu arnt worth it

You want to hear something funny. Most places sell X800 pro's cheaper than 9800xt's ;)

Unless things have changed since may :x

Like two other people pointed out the price of an x800 is not that different from a 9800xt. So if you're spending any money on a new gfx card, spend it on an x800. Hell, a 6800 GT would be great, too.

How does the Nvidia 5700 stack up against these cards? I don't know any more specifics, someones considering selling it to me cheap since they just got an X800.

9800 is past gen now. Save up for a 6800.

last i checked (last nigh) the x800 is nowhere near the price of a 9800 xt.

I seen some good 9800 XT 256 cards for about 170 quid while most x800 are about nearer to 300.

Also I got told the 9800 XT are better than 9800 pros.

explain.

If you call a 10% performance increase "better" then go for it.
