I got 1gb of kingmax ddr400 (2x 512)
My piece of crap skt 754 mobo only has 3 slots, and i dnt want a 1gb stick, so is it worth the extra moneys (not much, its pretty cheap RAM) to go to 1.5gb? What kinda differenc will i see?
AMD A64 3200+
6800gt

Do you actually ever use that amount of ram, because normally 1gb is enough, unless you are into video/image editting. You should see how much ram you are using when your pc isn't doing much, and when it is in the middle of a high res game like Doom 3, HL2 or Farcry.

what's the best way to check? Is it alt-tab out and ctrl-alt-del 'processes'?

Ctrl + Alt + Del and then Performance Tab, it will tell you the total and the available so you can see how much you are using.

I have 1GB RAM and I've never even come close to using all of it. Even when I'm playing Half Life 2 I still have just under half my RAM available (~400MB). But then again the new games coming out might be more RAM intensive so I don't know.

Better safe than sorry :cheese:

Don't bother, if you're the type of user who needs that amount of ram then you probably wouldn't need to ask that question, natch.

ive seen ppl with 4 gigs of ram and i dont think they even use video or cad programs geez 4 gigs is outrageous

I just got 2 gigs of RAM, and it really helps with loading times, things are also a lot smoother in games, no more sudden FPS drops when something is loading.

What did you have?
I added 512mb to my other 512 mb recently (ddr400, cl2.5), and now I never have those things anymore. So why did you buy 2gig?
IMO, It's not worth the money.

also lost coast and hdr overall would kinda like 1 to 2 gigs of ram anyways but that is not concrete

yea the lost coast dose require about 1gig of ram doesnt win xp64 require at least a gig of ram

When i went up to 1.5 gigs on a mistake (they sent me a gig stick instead of 512 when ordering for a second comp so i put the other 512 in my comp that already had a gig) i noticed an increase in speed, it wasnt really that much, but i find that the more ram the better, especially if you run alot of apps, and do things for photo and video editing, and for the future too.

Don't think so, the system requirements for it are much teh same as the 32bit version where by the minimum amount of ram is 256mb. The only difference between teh 32bit and 64bity versions is the type of processor you can use. Here is a link taht shows teh system requirements for the trial version which I would imagine is much the same as teh retail version. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/trial.mspx

You will have to be careful when going beyond 1GB of memory. Don't use all 512MB sticks when doing so or it could slow the memory speed down. Desktops can only address so much memory while maintaining full speed. Link

If you go with 1GB sticks then you should be OK though. The gain is marginal depending on what you will be doing. Up to you.

my win xp64 is using around 300 meg of ram , steam use's upto 60 meg on my system and hl2 uses 512 meg when i add the heapsize command , i am using 1.5 gig of ddr400 and i do not get as much disk access lag now

yeah, i dont think i use 1gb when playing games, but it'll run and load faster right?
Also, does it have to be same brand preferably? And can you mix 1gb sticks with 512s?

It does help if you stick to the same manufacturer, saves on any problems that might occur if your motherboard is fussy about the ram. I think its ok to use a 1gb stick and a 512mb stick together, the only thing I would say is that when you are buying the ram, you should make sure that you get the same speed and timings as the motherboard will use teh timings from teh slowest DIMM, so if they are both the same then it doesn't really matter.

I had 1 gig, it brought the load times in BF2 from about 45 seconds down to 10 seconds.

wow that's actually quite impressive. ah well..

n on erele read the rest of the thread, asus posted a link, more ram not necessarily = more performance:p

go to the bottom of page 1

well im only using 2 sticks (1Gig each) and the CL is 2.5 :D. So i wont be going beyond the 2 dimm slot thing.

When i go dual core i'm gonna need more ram for all those processes i'm gonna run. :-D. Right now i have 1 gig and even when running hl2 i only use up 800mbs.

IMO, if you're going to upgrade from 1GB go to 2GB. 1.5GB isn't worth it, and you can't do dual channel mode.
