...Why half-life is called half-life?

Pardon me if this is a newb question.

um, i think, umm...... um. well.. here is my guess, gordon is like at state of death, hes in a sittuation of life n death, maybe thats y

half-life is a term used to find out how long a radioactive material will remain radioactive(I think correct me if im wrong) And the first half-life was full of radioactivity. Thats my guess

Actually its the period of time it takes for a radioactive substance to half in reactivity.... eg 1000 bpm, 500, 250 etc.. on a gieger counter (SP?)

Hmm...

Half-life is a measurement for how long it takes radioactive material to decay to 50% of its mass as its origenal substance. The atomic clock uses this decay as a clock, allowing accurate measurements. Then, you can buy clocks in stores that are updated every 10 mins to nano-second accurate time by this atomic clock. It is in colorado, if im not mistaken.

Any other ideas?

Maybe since freeman is continuesly frozen, he lives almost a half-life. I dunno.

um, if u already knew that, u practialy answered urself

This is really like the 48794379823th thread on this. It was generally decided that Half-Life is named what it is is because its a scientific term, which describes the length of time it takes for a certain substance to decay, which seems fitting for the HL universe.

hmm...

So, let me get this staight. We worship this game, yet we do not know for certain why it is named what it is.

Does ANYONE know? Does anyone know if we will find out?

my guess has always been...

the world we live in is (half - life)

the OTHER half life is XEN. the alien world.

one half OUR WORLD.. other half XEN

Wouldn't that be half-world then?

There is something Valve has up their sleeves... I hope we find out why it is named Half-life in HL2.

Because Half-Life pwnz j00r mother.

That's why. I can't think of any other reason.

Maybe although Half-life does have alot to do with science e.g Lambda, Half-life etc.

human life is one half

the other half is Xen

aka half-life is humans

All the Half-Life titles have been scientific.

Half-Life = Time it takes for 50% of something to decay.

Blue Shift = Astronomical term w/ relation to blue/red haze observed when viewing stars (blue / red determined by the direction the light is traveling, I think)

Opposing Force = Newton's 3rd law (for every force there is an equal and opposite force, ie action & reaction)

I personal love the titles cuz they sound cool and very fiting 1st, and are actually smart 2nd.

Yes, but that has to do with radioactive studies of chemical decay. Is there another meaning for Half-Life? Cause for some reason, even though Half-Life did have radioactive materials, most of black mesa wasn't for the study of radiation.

So, does the radiation in Half-Life has special significance later on? Is it some secret weapon against the new aliens that have moved to earth?

This is driving me crazy.

Edit: I didn't know about all those names. However, they all make sense in their context, exept half life.

takes half a life for hl2 to come out

gordon doesnt know half is life (that is to come or has been)

half life is humans other half is xen aliens

half life is our world the other life is Xen

dunno who knows

Why is Quake called Quake? Why is Doom called Doom?

Half-life is just a cool sounding name that fits the scientific theme of the game.

half life

n : the time required for something to fall to half its initial value (in particular, the time for half the atoms in a radioactive substance to disintegrate)

blue shift
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A general displacement of spectral lines to shorter wavelengths that happens when a source of electromagnetic radiation moves toward the observer (see Doppler effect): the greater the velocity of approach along the line of sight, the greater the blueshift. Individual stars within the Milky Way Galaxy frequently show blueshifts. However, with the exception of a few galaxies within the Local Group, including the Andromeda Galaxy, most extragalactic objects exhibit redshifts, due to the overall expansion of the universe.

opposing force is a force of something that preses against another force

anyone seeing a fu*king THEME YET? all science-type crap because gord is a scientist. god you people are daft

And we love you, too.

After playing the game, I thought the title fitted well because Gordon has 100 points of health and another 100 points of HEV suit protection - so it's his half-life.

Its a reference to chemisty like many other things in the game. Its about nuclear breakdowns, it may have just been a marketing ploy becuase the public seem to understand there being a meltdown and sh*t happening rather than portals and alien worlds.

I bet its both. You know how titles to movies and songs many times have dual meanings.
