Would somone please explain this to me...

Sorry, I know there's loads of threads about the benchmark but I just wanted to ask this question with a chance of actually getting an answer rather than have it buried under a mountain of other posts... So:

He [Newell] also announced that the standalone Half-Life 2 benchmark will be available to the press on September 30. - Gamespot

What!? Why would they release the benchmark on 30th Sept? And why only to the press?

This threw up a suspicion in my mind that I don't even want to touch upon.

I think it just means that you get the BM on sep 30 or even with the game, and everyone will get it.

or vavle are being sneaky and will release it earlier.

neither of the other sites has said they were releasing the BM with the game (quite the contrary), i don't trust gamespot anymore since they say HL2 is coming Q4 2003??1 morons...

anyways, i won't belive this until valve makes it official, or if there's a press conf. vid released....

Maybe they want to keep the benchmark until the game is out to hide some things they want to be a surprise, or something like that.

Erm, the other sites said that they were releasing to the Public on the 30th of September.

Quite a few members of the Press already have the benchmark, and are releasing their own results on Friday.

You don't trust them because they're stating a broader/safer range that is in fact, only one day off of the "official" date? As a news organisation, with as much differing info is out there and with no official press releases to the contrary, I don't think that Q4 2003 is a bad thing to state...

I doubt there'd be any kind of spoiler in a BM - theycould make it whatever they wanted after all...
A small scirpted sequence in a tech demo room or something 30 seconds, bam.

as a news site they should leave their own beliefs aside, and go with the date they've been told by the developer, its as easy as that!
