Would you prefer HL3 out quicker or another new engine?

Half Life 3...

I sure hope Valve doesn't recycle Source for hl3. Sourcet put the first HL to shame, and we all rejoiced. Personally, I think valve needs to end the half-life series with the next game (or the expansion), and move on, because otherwise it could get stale. Then again... Source looks so sweet that they might not need to make a new engine. Sad how it didn't get nearly as much attention as BS like halo2 did. Either way, whatever they make will look sweet

I spent alot of money to experience the story of HL2 and since i didnt get my questions awensered i would think it best they just made an expansion for it :borg:

Valve has already stated that HL3 would run on a heavily heavily modified/upgraded Source engine (Think like Source Squared), mainly to aid in the development cycle of HL3.

I say bring half life 3 out quicker, using source, just updated, it would be completley impractical to have them take another 5-6 years building a new engine.

Hold that, I'm quite positive that valve said there's an expansion coming (which will probably answer all our questions). The wait for HL3 may be long, but we waited for HL2, and I dare say it was worth it. By reusing Source Valve could risk losing people's interest (its the old thing with a new # lads, hooray...)

I say new engine. Source wont last that long with D3 and Unreal 3.0 on the horizon

Wow, I thought this thread was dead last time I checked. Someone above mentioned Meqon...is that batter than Havok? It certainly does fluids much better. And ragdoll seem more realistic. But how practical is it?
Another good physics engine is NovodeX Rocket. Not sure if that is used in any game yet though....

An upgraded source engine would be more pratictal, and it will probably be able to fight UE3 (Okay, dynamic lighting is darn cool, but I'm sure Source could with some tweaking...)

You mean as in water effects? If it did, we woold have heard about it.

I think Valve should just modify the Source engine for HL3 to include better gfx, Lighting & general FX. The HL engine was after all a modified Quake engine. They worked wonders with that engine & off the strength of that I'm confident that Source is something that will evolve to become better & better.

I would definatly want a new engine and hopfully they would take note of how epic make engines since imo they have the best engines for editing to date.

I'm surprised HL2 doesn't use Shaders 3.0
I get a performance improvement on things like FarCry when I switch the shaders to 3.0

aparrently in hl2 source was only 35% in use roughly.... imagine the power if it was in full use!!! i think they will only tweak it

Yeah, I say fix all the reported bugs with the physics engine - make some more detailed stuff (textures, models, whatever it mat be) and just make the story-line over it. Besides, i think the HL2 source engine is near its peak, its hard to make it better as of now...i cant even see room to improve on it o_O

If they make a few good expansions then, it shouldn't matter if we have to wait a while for HL3, as I feel the only diff b/w HL3 and the exp's is that the exps do not have Gordon.

Ummm... okay, but are you sure you want him to be munching on your heart?

I'm clearly not following something here.

Proof please?

Post a link or something

i think they sould update the engine. and we can live off the mods
for the time being

why redo something they've already done? They just update the source engine as they need to...

Why would they want to scrap Source after five years of developing it specifically to be immensely flexible and upgradable? It will be modified heavily, I've no doubt, but HL3 will be on Source.

EDIT: He said it first :D

source engien has horrible lighting, if you could increase the texture size in hl1 and polycounts u get urself the graphics of source, minus the dx shaders. What happend to the hdr? it would add a lot. Lightmapping is old tech which creates mediocre results in this day, if valve even plans to release a decent looking game in 2=< years they really should upgrade the lighting, its my only problem with the game, that and really gay texture and modeling tools.

and what engine isnt upgradable?

Not going to read the whole thread, but I think they should just pimp up Source.

Agreed + agreed

I'll say 4 years. Because they dont have to make a new engine, just modify, create content, and make a thrilling game. Hopefully it doesnt take a step backwards, as far as immersion goes, because HL2 = Godlike(for 2k4-2k5).

and what engine isnt upgradable?
The new engine is EXTREMELY upgradable. It can be done alot faster and much easier and to a much greater extent.

update engine. its old if you think about it. its a year old by the time hl2 was released. sure the engine is greeeeeeeeat, but developing a new one would be good in terms of keeping ahead of the competition = great selling angle.

I believe the HDR is in the engine, HL2 doesn't use it though. Have a look at the e3 source demo (i think thats what it is called).

HL2 doesn;t use everything the source engine has :p

But yes the lighting does suck. Maybe their re-doing it right now

i personally do not really care about the graphics, but want to know how the story goes, and if it really is highly upgradeable, even better. And it was released that source is being used for hl3. A statement from Gabe himself i am pretty sure.

If they do decide to update the source engine I want more realistic gore. Like when you shoot someone in the head a chunk of it is missing and brains are exposed. That would truly add to the emotion and immersion in my perspective. I would also like to see allies along the way able to die without being scripted. I don't know how many times father Gregory got smacked around by a zombie and never died. I just think it would be a better expierence if the the allies could die.

Only problem is that Farther Gregory was a bit part of the plot....not much use of them in the story if they die before they say what they need to :p

For more gore, it's nothing todo with the engine. They probably wanted to keep the rating low so the younger people could still buy it :p
