I've not seen a poll on this subject so here goes...

Before the leak or any other security compromises at VALVe I would almost definitely have fed my credit card details into Steam for a copy of HL2, but now I don't much feel like buying or subscribing to play over Steam.

I know there will be those that reply saying '..well don't then...' but I actually thought it was a good idea and a good way of getting my money direct to VALVe rather than some bunch of box shifting monkeys.

It's just that all of that changed 9/11

This is based on my assumption that the full C++ code for Steam is now floating around the net for all and sundry to see, coupled with the apparent lack of basic security of critical data at VALVe (ie: no firewall or minimal firewall/DMZ), and then the social engineering incident by Munro.

So the poll is;

Will you feed your debit/credit card details into Steam when it goes live

And optionally as replies;

What would it take for VALVe to win the trust of securely holding our credit card details ?

I can't think of anything in my mind, other than them somehow now using a trusted 3rd party provider...(is that possible?)

PS: I'm not a Steam/VALVe basher, just a concerned consumer :afro:

i think steam is gay, i think valve is gay, and soon i might think hl2 is gay. For all i care vavle could just blow up. Onward to call of duty and doom3....

How about you go buy the shelf version of HL2? This way Steam will never need to ask you for a CC number!

u dont mean that, ur just to cought up in this mess. When the game finnaly comes out we will be laughing at this moment.

The only thing I am using Steam for is updates and the multiplayer server. They are not going anywhere NEAR my credit card.

I agree with above poster - Steam is a failure. Valve should just dump the whole idea and stick with End User patches/updates.

I pity anyone who tries to d-load HL2 via steam...

yeah either that, or playing call of duty.

OMG, i just remembered something really funny. Its not on topic with steam but it is with patches.

Alright, so im talking to my friends and he said his friend just bought cs and hl and officail mods like op4. He says he can only play hl and op4. I ask him "Why?" He says that his friend said he needs a patch. I say "Then why dosnt he d/l the patch" Then he says that he dosnt know where it is. lol stupid ppl make me funny funny.

right now ? no

VALVE need to confirm that its secure from hackers and fix all the bugs before I put anything like that down.

I would never have given them my info in the first place. I don't think the whole concept of content delivery is all that great. Pay $50 and what do you get? A txt file with the CD-Key in it. Gee thanks!

can someone explain me what steam is for? playing online? why would we need to pay to play online? i dont get it..

With the way things are going, you won't have to pay ANYTHING to play HL2...

*Kazza Search "Cracked HL2"*
*9,898,765 results*

Valve made it so they could patch the game a lot. Its also for stupid ppl who cant find patches on 1 out of 1000 sites on the internet.

but we dont NEED steam to play online... right...?

get off the forum then!

It's so Valve can record your gaming and browsing habits and sell it to 3rd party marketing sites.

The poll is missing a very important alternative:

* I never give credit card details over Internet, no matter what

I'll still trust Valve and any other legit company on the internet with my CC#, cause all my internet transactions are insured. You're a moron if you're buying anything off the internet without an insured card anyway.

Steam is more than just a auto-updating game server list, it also puts $25 more into Valves pockets for every copy of HL2 sold through it instead of through boxed distribution. I'd personally like Valve to have the money to put towards an even bigger and more badassed HL3.

I'm not in any great hurry to get HL2 and especially not by compromising my C/Card details.

My poll is more to get a general census from the community as to how they feel about buying HL2 through Steam (I believe that Steam wasn't just offering a subscription based pay-to-play, but also a one off pay-to-own option that was cheaper than buying from a store)

The Steam sales business model must be in tatters now.

PS: Ridic - You obviously downloaded the 1.3Gb gay porn w@rez of HL2.

be seeing ya then

Hardly a conclusive poll !

Come on people, I sent Gabe an email with a link to this post, it may help cheer him up (he can't be any more depressed at the moment by being reminded about %$£@)

I think Valve will have learned some important lessons duing the last few weeks. From now on they will be one of the most security conscious firms around.

Steam will be VERY secure once it's up and running with HL2. I for one will have NO worries about giving my details.

i could trust steam/valve, but i hate buying software downloads. i would want a hard copy.
(burning a cd wouldnt do)

buying hl2 from a gamestore id the best way.

I'm buying it via retail anyway, but why not? They'll fix it prior to release and all will be well. Don't you think that would be one of the FIRST things fixed? Geesh

Who cares if nasty hackers get your credit card number from website -- you're not liable for their stolen purchases anyway. :)

At least in UK you're not. ;)

StooMonster

I figure they will have learnt a few lessons too. :)

I guess, assuming they can give me the usual assurances then I will be happy to hand over the details. I'm inclined to want to do it outside Steams framework though.

I voted that, yes, I would trust them. That said, I have no intention of purchasing anything through Steam.

Amazing Ridic, really spectacular.

No I don't think Steam is secure at all. I turn it off whenever I don't need it to avoid any problems.

You're not in trouble of getting a virus or something like that unless they can somehow get software onto the content servers (which is at best doubtful) or if you downloaded an infected steam install in the first place.

Thanks for all those that have voted so far, I think my 'Maybe' option should have been split into two options, ie;

Maybe, if VALVe guarantee security

and

I never give credit card details over Internet, no matter what

as suggested by pjotr at the top of page 2 (pjotr - you were right, sorry!)

Anyway, opinion is still divided, which may be more a result of people wanting to be able to trust VALVe future security systems.

I think I set the poll to last for no more than 1 day, so it'll be interesting to see how this stands tomorrow, assuming my poll thread doesn't slide of the bottom of the forum ! ;(

for the peopel asking if you need steam:

in the same way you need WON to play hl1 online, in the same way you will need steam. except steam is something you need to download. but will take over what WON does now and more.

Listen to poseymac you all should. Yes.

Well... most secure protocols have public source code and what? They are still secure...

Anyway, I'm not buying HL2 on Steam for the simple matter of its size... 1,5 - 2Gb download (maybe more) is just crazy for the average connection here in Spain... Maybe if I had a T1/T3... Maybe...

Pjotr - Yes, but that still counts as a No.

Yes, but the whole question seems aimed at finding out who does not trust Valve after they lost their source code. But for someone who never payes over Internet it doesn't matter, so these should have two different options.

Id keep my CC away from steam or anything like it vavle comes out with.

good question. I will definetely think twice before using my credit card on steam.

even if somehow a hacker got all the credit cards and spent all the money on them....valve would have to reimburse everyone, and they will have the means to do so easily. its not something to worry about
