I'm in my first co op term with a fairly large and popular company (Research In Motion), the people who make BlackBerries. Basically I've been kissing ass, doing EVERYTHING they've been telling and then some, to obviously make a good impression and hopefully convince them to ask me back to work with them next co op work term in September.

This morning, I wake up with a really bad fever, body aches and a huge headache. I'm already pretty pissed off at myself because I wanted to complete the 4 months there without missing a single day.

Whatever, I said to myself shit happens right? Go to email my team but there's already an email from another guy SAYING THE EXACT SAME THING.

FFFUUUUU...What am I supposed to do? I'm legitimately sick and in no shape to work at all.

The team that I work with are pretty cool guys but for some reason I think it's going to make me look bad by sending the exact same email to my team as this other guy only minutes after..

I sent the email anyways and so far nobody has replied which they usually do...so now I'm scared I've started a bad reputation for myself.

/end rant.

tl dr? gtfo.

Go into work, talk to your boss, tell him what's up and that you're ready to work if he wants you to work.

He'll probably send you home. If not, +1 brownie points even though it'll be a shitty day.

Plz Akira, the real tl;drs are 4x longer than that, no double spacing.

And **** them if they don't believe you, get a doctor's note, have evidence! The other guy may not and he'll get ****ed for being a douchebag.

I would but the company has hundreds of signs everywhere saying "If you have a fever accompanied by 1 or more of these symptoms STAY HOME"...then they list headaches, body aches, chills etc..

So I'm basically just following protocol...they can't say anything to that can they?

And I would go in but I'm in no shape to drive, the light hurts my eyes and the cold will probably make things worse.

You're ill, stay at home. I could understand if you worked at the Academy of Excellence Through Large Natural Breasts, but blackberries?

Be a badass, drive into work with boogers and slime seeping from your nostrils and say "Day at RIM is like a day on the farm." Make sure you're smoking a cigar. Your bosses are waiting for your type to take initiative and show them you're a cut above the rest. This is your chance. That feeling inside urging you not to go? That's cowardice: a trait most of your coworkers share.

You're not a coward, are you?

I'd only expect if it was a regular occurrence.

Just **** being sick and get back to work, sissy. Then go hit the gym and work that shit out.

Don't you get it bro? You're the evil corporation's test subject.

ya know, seeing as another person is out might lend legitimacy to your claim in their eyes...after all, sickness spreads. just check your email every half hour and if nothing comes back, go to bed and worry about it later.

Everyone's afraid of swine flu man... if you even imply that you might have it you can be quarantined for a decade.

I get so ****ing sick of hearing people say they think they have the swine flu.

Well they replied to the other guys email within a minute..and a minute after that I sent pretty much the same email but no reply...whatever It's getting worse by the hour so I'm just going to go to bed in a bit lol.

Anyone have any remedy suggestions??

I'm going to go out and buy tylenol in a bit...how about certain herbal teas? I hear they're good for cold/flu.

Why didn't you just say "I know it's putting you in a bad spot, especially since another guy called out, but I'm very ill and contagious. I can provide a doctors note, if necessary."

Email him again.

I think it's way too late for that. I emailed them around 8 am this morning and now it's 10:15.

No call, no show, no job. You didn't get a response, you should make sure they got the email in the first place, IMO. It will also give you an opportunity to convince them you are actually sick and the job is important to you.

This.

Also, posting in HL2.net is a bad way to start your proof of illness. :p

virus is just trying to scare you.

Why would you expect an email? My company never replies if I email in sick. Perhaps they just think the email they sent to the other guy could also apply to you.

or perhaps they just don't care about you.

It's probably going to be fine, but I would hate to leave it to chance.

Take a NyQuil(non-drowsy) and drink some tea.
Damn, I'm late.
Oh well, that'll still help.

The hell man?

I provide you with exellent advice for a remedy, then like two posts down you ask for remedy suggestions??? No, you know what, screw you. I hope you get the swine flue. There, I said it. You sir, have been Jinxed.

You guys all email your bosses if you're going to be sick? Every job I've had I needed to call, which makes it harder because I have to make my voice sound really raw like I actually do have a cold.

If you want to stay home from work, just call as soon as you wake up. That way, you really do feel like shit, and really do have a scratchy voice. No lying or faking required - "Sorry, I can't come in today, I feel absolutely terrible. I really need to stay in bed. I'm just really drowsy and confused - I am stumbling around here. "

I don't like lying, sometimes I get nervous. But if you call when you wake up, you won't. Besides, you're not lying.

OR JUST SHOW UP AND TELL THEM YOU'LL WORK IF THEY WANT YOU TO

THEY CAN'T SAY YES

But you already screwed yourself over; expect a 2 week notice soon.

I just got an email from your boss, he told me to tell you to clean up your desk.

I don't email in too often, but when I do I try my hardest to make the recipient question whether or not I'll live through the day. The trick is to not simply exaggerate, but to over exaggerate without sounding like you're over exaggerating.

Example:

Hi (name here),

I will not be able to come into work today, I am fighting off a cold. I am also bleeding out of my ass.

-Tyler

Should've put anthrax in the email. See if those ****ers turn their noses up at you then.

Hmmm, I THINK YOU'RE FAKING. I'm calling your boss.

NO DON'T :(

Seriously though I'm renting an appt with my friend in a city that's about 2 hours away from my house for 4 months so when he went to work I had no choice but to get my ass up and go to the drug store (which thank god was conveniently located 5 minutes away).

Your story is full of holes, tell us the truth AKIRA, your faking it.

Wish I was...I actually really like my job and thus have no reason for not showing up. I live 2 hours away from home, where all my friends are currently in school during the day...I have no cable TV and the computer gets boring after a couple of hours.

No reason to fake.

So what kind of job do you do at RIM?

Video conference?

Don't fret, your RIM job is safe.

I know, I know, I've been beaten, but I couldn't resist, since mine is more obvious

See, I don't like the idea of mentioning a doctors note. It presents the notion that they should have a reason to feel as though you're an untrustworthy individual. It's also potentially making a bigger deal out of it than need be.

Don't stress about it. If you were sick, you were sick. Don't ever bring up anything about a doctors note. Horrible idea.
