Yes, but the difference there is that each player you see in deathmatch also has his/her own first person model (a pair of arms) on his/her own computer. From their own point of view, their player character is just a pair of arms, just like Gordon in HL2. Saves on computing power.
Just because you see a full-body model when you look at them, doesn't mean it's the same thing on their computer. What's going on behind the scenes is basically something along the lines of thier computer figuring out what their player instance is currently doing (running, starfing, firing, whatever), sending it to the server, and then the server sends it to everyone else (I think). When your computer recieves the message, it renders a model of the appropriate type there, doing the appropriate thing. These models are proportionally less detailed than a full-body first person model would be.
