To be fair, the series has been dying in the genre to the likes of Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter, etc. all of which feature no fatalities or excessive gore. I guess they're trying to appeal to a wider demographic range rather than relying on the same old formula and attracting the same MK fanbase that's been dwindling.

On June 24, 2008, a recent interview with Ed Boon. He confirmed that all of the MK characters and all of the DC villains will have fatalities. The DC heroes however, will have brutalities instead of fatalities.
