X-COM: Enemy Unknown remake in development at Firaxis Games

I need to see a gameplay video first.

Once I've seen gameplay I'll believe, but oh God please be true.

Can't help but feel sorry for the fellas making Xenonauts though, this will blow thier title out of the water most likley.

I bought the original Xcom on Steam, then I decided to buy the pre-order of Xenonauts. I had the intention of buying XCOM and now Xcom: Enemy Unknown has been announced. Any more ET defence games should I know about?

Also is this some sort of pre-21st Decomber 2012 hype?
"Be prepared for a Alien Invasion this Winter: BUY OUR GAME NOW!"

I'm just waiting to see how they'll eventually change this concept so much they'll screw it up beyond belief and it won't even resemble the original. That's just the cynic in me after the abomination of the FPS idea. Hoping and praying this is even half as good as the originals.

If the FPS wasn't branded XCOM, would you consider it?

Very good question. To be honest, probably not, but only because I haven't bought or played an FPS (or any game for that matter) for over a year. It just seemed a bit on the generic side, but I haven't seen it in action and probably should bite my tongue. It didn't capture much of my attention, let's put it that way.

The FPS even not branded as X-COM would have caught my attention... but, dear god please let this be true..... I spent so many hours playing the original, and the sequels, and I now have them on Steam, but still, there is a part of me hoping the there will be a remake/new version that keeps the original feel and doesn't screw us over by giving us 6hrs gameplay when UFO gave us sooooooooooooooooooo much more!!!

I want to believe, but.... Consoles.

This would be bad if this was a real-time game, necessitating to dumb down gameplay and features to fit the controllers. X-COM is going to be a turn based game, though, so they can make it as complex as they want.

UFO series. Especially Afterlight.

Oh yeah, I forgot I already got that. To be honest I prefered the first in the series.

As for the FPS XCOM, kinda hoping that they bring in some Condemned gameplay. We already know that you earn some kind of points for photgraphing incidents, but what about electromagnetic and radiological readouts?

I want to believe, but.... Consoles.

X-COM: Enemy Unknown and X-COM: Terror From The Deep both got faithful ports to the PS1, they even had support for the Playstation mouse.

Hell, in 2005 Namco published Rebelstar: Tactical Command for the GameBoy Advance, it was basically X-COM battlescape with a linear story.

It was designed by Julian Gollop with Nick Gollop as the lead programmer.

So X-COM on consoles/portables certainly is doable if the will is there.

Yeah but... Civilization Revolution.

Not that it was bad, but it was undeniably simplified for consoles, and not just in terms of controls.

I still play that game from time to time. It's been in my old brick of a DS for years. If they had the destructible environments like XCOM, that game would be top notch. Still a very nice game, I like it a lot.

Despite Civ Revolution being simplified, I think Firaxis is about as lucky as we can get for a development team. Firaxis has been one of the best turn-based developers for a long time, and has the budget and talent to give this remake the attention it deserves.

With that said, I'll be waiting to hear what they have to say in the new Game Informer issue before I get my hopes up.

I like how the base is side on rather than top-down now. I wonder how far down it goes?

I knew it wouldn't be long, but it already sounds bastardized. I strongly detest the in-game screenshot first and foremost as it has less than zero XCom feel. Ugly colors, garbage UI, some line that looks like cultural borders from Civ and a freaking mini-map?!? No time units = not XCom = me not buying.

Also, here is an article from gamespy. More "what is wanted" than "what we're getting."

I don't understand. Who's the target audience for this game, the original X-Com players on PC, or the casual, console players?

Bump.

Whole load of gameplay videos out for this now with a preview copy in the hands of many games mags.

It's looking pretty damn good, even the console version!

This 3-parter video should give you a good idea.

Despite not posting any news in this thread, I have been following this game very closely since it's announcement. Sufficed to say I pre-ordered it and can't freaking wait to play it!

**** me it looks great. Do I spend my last 30 quids on it?

I think despite the changes and Fishlore and Lucid's alarm this looks very X-COM.
Psyched.

Yeah, I've actually been sold on it for a while now.
Unfortunately, they dropped support for XP so I won't be able to play it anyways.

Wow, that 's kind of crappy. Is it DX10/11 only then?

Bump.

PC demo is out now. Available from the XCOM: Enemy Unknown store page in Steam.
It's pretty much just the tutorial FYI.

Ooo, thanks for the tip Eejit! Gonna give it a go now.

EDIT: Just completed it and I must say I like it a lot. After the tutorial they give you one mission where you have the freedom to do what you want. It was rated easy, and it wasn't hard to complete it with no casualties, but I can definitely see how you would get punished for being careless.

Really excited for this to come out.

So this game is pretty great so far. Started on Classic and figured out quite quickly that this game REALLY punishes you for making mistakes. Overextending, especially with rookies, can easily cause half of your squad to be killed in one turn (as I had happen, though by some miracle my newly promoted sniper made some clutch shot and I managed to scrape by that mission). The tutorial session is kinda long and hand-holdy, but I've just gotten past that part and I'm excited to see the game open up.

This game is awesome.

Punishing, pain in the ass, but so much fun.
