So I just purchased an ATI x1900xtx off of ebay, and in doing some reading I realized I might possibly have to upgrade my power supply. Firstly I've read that some cards require a cable from the power supply directly to the PCI-E card. If I'm not running crossfire do I need this? Here is my current system:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
512MB DDR400 PC3200 Memory (x3 1.50GB TOTAL)
ASUS A8N-SLI NFORCE4 SLI 3PCI,2PCI-E,4DDR,SATA
Maxtor 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache SATA Primary
Maxtor 250GB 7200RPM 16MB IDE Secondary
LG 16X 4167B DVD RW +- Dual Layer Rewriter
Asus Vento 3600 Gaming Case (Black)
430 Watt Thermaltake Power Supply With Dual Fan

As for USB, i have my mouse, keyboard, camera, printer and ipod all plugged in.

I've read other people online with a similar power supply to mine saying the same card runs fine for them on their system. If I do need to upgrade, could anyone recommend a good power supply at a good price? Thanks alot.

Most PCI-E gfx cards require their own power cable, so the chances are this one will to. If yours dosen't have one and you gfx card does require one, you will need a new PSU.

PSUs range from tens, to hundreds of pounds. If you tell us roughly how much you are looking to spend, we can better recommend one.

Be aware that the PSU is not really somewhere to scrimp on.

His system is different than mine though. Do you think i should upgrade, what risks am I taking if i dont?

The PSU may die, may not power all components properly, always a chance of frying some components...just always good to be 100% sure.

Alright, well I just ordered a 500W power supply just to be safe. Thanks for the help.

Anyways, so how many people here have a x1900xtx and are you pretty happy with the overall performance? Do you think my system is going to be able to run Unreal 2K7 and Crysis at high settings when they're released?

I have an X1950XT, it's very close to yours, but a wee bit faster. And It's absolutely terrific. It runs every game I tried on max detail easily (on a 1280x1024 LCD).

Just out of curiosity, what did it cost you?

Oh really, good. I actually have a 24inch dell widescreen, so I'm hoping to play most games at 1920x1200 if possible.

I paid about $200 US.

Damn, I payed $150 USD for my 1800XT...

Oh really wow. Yah the guy said the card is brand new, he has a friend who works at ATI and purchased the card through a family and friends shopping day or something. And never wound up even using the card.

One thing I didn't understand that he said was the video card was a "registered" card. Does anyone know that that means?

You can buy dedicated psu's for graphics cards, they sell 200w psu's which fit in to a 5 1/4" bays. Pretty cheap. Try newegg.com
