Was at Digitallife in NYC today and I got to see two XBOX 360 games being played in person (by lucky people in the crowd) on an HDTV display, plus a ton of other games on a high definition demo reel.

LIVE GAMEPLAY

Project Gotham Racing 3
--
This game has the most amazing graphics I have ever seen on any racer ever. While that is not surprising since this is XBOX 360, I didn't expect one thing - the dashboard view. PGR3 adds a new camera where you see the steering wheel and dash, and I have never seen any game ever execute such a realistic looking dash. Combine that with the ultra-realistic tracks and crowds (that even react to onscreen events) and its pretty crazy. You even see scratches on the windshield when in dashboard view. IMO, this game will be the #1 piece of "eye candy" for the XBOX360, and looks to be a spectacular racer. Pretty much everyone in the crowd was ooohing and ahhing at the site of it. Put bluntly, it looks almost like real-life. Pretty amazing stuff.

Kameo
--
Rare put out a gem here and really utilized a ton of the XBOX 360's power. In the gameplay segment I saw, there were hundreds of giant dragons flying through the air as you played. It was incredible to see such massive amounts of creatures swarming through the air, something that can only be done with geometry instancing. While I was watching it, I pretty much thought "wow, the ingame graphics are better than prerendered movies in most games." This game looks like it will be a fantastic platformer and the sheer variety in gameplay that was displayed makes it look like a platformer to be reckoned with. Move over Mario, I think we have a new champ here.

Now, on the non-interactive demo reel I saw:
--
Perfect Dark Zero
Though it had some eye-popping effects, not an over-the-top graphical stunner like PGR3 or Kameo. That being said, it still looked amazing and much better than you'd think with some of the criticism of this title. Framerates looked very smooth. The latest trailer made the game look really fun by showcasing some of the things you can do in it. It appears that this will be more of a tactical, objective based game such as the original Perfect Dark. From what I saw, this game could probably make launch but if its pushed back until XMAS I would not be surprised. IMO this will be a must-buy for FPS fans, but as stated earlier its NOT a run-and-gun game like Halo. It is more of a tactical objective-based FPS.
--
Condemned: Criminal Origins
This now looks totally different than it did at E3 in a good way. Much more graphical detail. The build shown did not seemed fully optimized and suffered from slowdown. It looked like this will not make it until early 2006.
--
Call of Duty 2
Some impressive footage was shown, with incredible smoke effects. The key to this game will be how well devs implement the controller.
--
Final Fantasy XI
This game looked very out of place and "last gen" compared to the other titles with its simple polygonal characters. IMO this one is going to get lost in the shuffle.
--
Chrome Hounds
Looked cool. Not much else to say.
--
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The footage shown was fantastic and head and shoulders above Morrowind. Truly incredible graphics with excellent combat was displayed. This will be a must buy.
--
Dead Rising
Only a brief clip of this was shown but its looking much improved over the E3 showing. From what I saw it looks like it could be a blast to play.
--
Gears of War
Looking impressive as usual running mostly at 60fps, a few instances of slowdown. This will be a real stunner when released.
--
King Kong
I basically saw King Kong start eating some guy. Not even sure WTF this game is about as the footage was brief. Graphics were pretty cool.
--
Dead or Alive 4
Fantastic graphics. More eye candy for XBOX360. The environments looked much more interactive than any prior DOA game, and the realism level appears to have been jacked up. Must buy for those who likes fighting games.
--
Quake 4
Looking excellent, though the build shown had some slowdown. I'm thinking this may be an XMAS release unless it was simply old footage that was shown. And, hey, its Quake, so it rules.
--
Test Drive Unlimited
This looked decent but Project Gotham Racing 3 stole the show and this game looked rather tame in comparison.
--
Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
From what I saw, it looked like an XBOX1 game. Disappointing, but then again Tony Hawk games have always been graphically disappointing.
--
Top Spin 2
Excellent graphics, looks like a solid continuation of the first. Still, even more could have been done graphically if more time was spent on it.
--
NBA 2K6
Amazingly realistic graphics, looked incredible in motion. A must-buy!

Overall I was very impressed by the XBOX 360 showing. I think most will be blown away come Nov 22! :D

P.S. -- ATI had an XBOX 360 running the new Ruby demo at their booth ;)

I was swamped by too much work to go but everything sounds very nice.

i'm really interested in the new look for Condemned you're talking about, that game really looks interesting

I actually want to know if the games are good. I don't care too much for graphics..

I've never seen a game on an HDTV :( They're too expensive for me.

thats my point. most people buying an xbox 360, ps3 and revolution dont have hd tvs. so alot of people might not be impressed.

I'd really like to see a game on an HDTV in person though. Too bad a 27" is like $400...and I have a 27" right now...not worth the $400 just to get HDTV without getting a tuner or anything.

Sounds puuurty cool. I know a friend of mine will be getting 360 so I don't think I'll bother.

Too bad you didn't have a video camera with you, or did you? :O

HDTVs are shiet expensive in Sweden but I'm a moron so I'm getting one anyway..
1,500 bucks out the Window.. and another 500 for the 360+games, 2,000, could use that to buy a new comp, but I'm obsessed with owning all consoles so.

Movies and current console games look great on standard tv's, so will 360 titles. They may not look as good as on an HDTV, but it wont be that much of a difference.

We can always use our monitor if a high res is what we want.

They will. PGR3, for instance, is so head and shoulders above anything that has been released that it will stun people even on a 19" TV.

Think of it this way. On a regular TV, you can still tell the difference between a PS2 game and a live action television show. Therefore, you will also be able to tell the difference between a less realistic PS2 game and a more realistic XBOX 360 game.

I'm still drooling over the PGR dashboard cam, the movement inside the car and realism is insane.

It still won't really matter, if the game looks amazing on HDTV it will look amazing on regular tv. I actually hope that they improved on the HDTV aspect of it, its good XBOX1 had it but it was pretty crappy.

It'll look amazing on a regular TV, there's really no difference aside from the resolution.

Lack of HDTV support: OMG How can you be so stupid to buy a system like that!?!

Has HDTV support: "OMG This is truly the next generation, I am getting this for sure."
"Do you have a HDTV?"
"Well... No. Too expensive"

Nah im just joking. The graphics will as always with a new system blow everyone away, then everyone will get used to them and start to expect the next generation.

My friend has a 1080i HDTV. We tried Jak 3 on progressive scan mode ( which is a long name for HDTV mode) and guess what, no difference what so ever. Maybe somegames will have some difference but i saw none.

EDIT: Oh and yes you have seen a game on an HDTV screen...your computer monitor. All monitors are "HDTV" in a sense.

They did improve it... Every XBOX 360 game is required to have support for 720p & 16:9 in addition to standard definition... And if your HDTV doesn't support 720p the XBOX360 has a builtin scaler to convert 720p to 1080i.

Just "Progressive Scan" mode is not HDTV (its actually called EDTV) - it is still 480p (720x480).

HDTV on the other hand is 720p (1280x720) or 1080i (1920x1080).

Some other titles I forgot to mention that I saw on the demo reel:

Mass Effect
--
The new RPG by Bioware of KOTOR fame. From the movie, it almost looked like an RPG FPS. I'm not sure how Bioware would pull that off, but it looks neat.

Too Human
--
A brief clip was shown that showed off some action segments from the game. The most impressive part was when the guy kneels down and then jumps back spreading lightsaber-like weapons from both arms killing enemies behind him.

motoGP 3
--
This looked like it was a bit early in dev, but was running at 60fps+ and had nice track detail.

Alone in the Dark X360
--
Some gruesome looking creatures were shown off in this trailer... Hopefully it will be as good as the original game.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
--
This game now manages to look even better than it did at E3. Spectacular graphics, sure to be a hit when released.

Sonic the Hedgehog X360
--
Very impressive looking, looking forward to the re-reinvention of Sonic in 3D.

They be guns foo!

Some mates to me got to play the 360, they were not very impressed by the graphics. Said that it was not really better than what a high-end PC can do. I for one will go with the true next-gen console which is PS3. The 360 looks and seems like crap tbh, i leave that to the 14-year old american fanboy..

I for one will go with BOTH the X-Box 360 AND the PS3, albeit I will only get a PS3 once MGS4 releases.:)

Only a fool judges a console on its first generation of games, especially before it's even released.

The 360 is great value for the hardware alone - it really is a beast. It'll certainly be far more powerful than my X800 xtpe and A64 pc, and at a fraction of the cost. Infact, if you look at the GPU specs alone you'll see how it blows any graphics card available for the pc out of the water.

Be careful - you're begining to sound like a '14-year old american fanboy' ;)

Either your mates are BSing you or they did not play any of the MS launch titles (Kameo, PGR3, PD:Z, etc). Graphics are stunning. That will be relatively obvious though come Nov 22.

Hey, my friend was there too! He won 500 bucks in the Halo 2 tourney. However, he really wasn't very impressed by the XB360's titles and graphics.

what makes the ps3 a 'true next-gen' console and the x360 not ?

way to horribly use stereotypes, rehab.

So how much new and innovative gameplay will these games offer just because there on the xbox360 and the ps3 vs if they were on the oringal xbox or ps3?
I seen an in-game Gotham Racing and it looked like any other racing game ever made. The graphics were nice, but.....it didn't look funner than other racing games.

None, that's up to the developers.

These are also first generation titles people. As someone explained on NTSC, these games 'started development on a single core machine, then moved to another single core machine, and then they recieved beta kits with triple cores running at the wrong speed, and then less than two months ago they recieved triple cores at the right speed'.

The fact that launch games already look and run as good as they do is very impressive. We've not seen what the 360 can do though, not by a long shot.
