"The Guardian’s Greg Howson has posted his early impressions from a day spent playing Xbox 360 games in Amsterdam. Bottom line: slick games, but not a lot of substance"

"Anyway, I’ve spent the day playing some more 360. And generally the impression is pretty positive, but I can’t help shake that feeling that the next-gen has to offer more than just sharper images. "

Condemned – Typically sharp visuals in this dark and violent first person game. Reminded me a bit of Max Payne’s gloom-noir locales but whether it will have that title’s class remains to be seen. Felt a bit loose to play too, not overly convinced by the 360 pad when it comes to first-person shooters.

Dead Rising – A zombie title that starts in a shopping mall. Maybe Dead Rising is trying to say something clever about commercialism and consumer trends? Unlikely. It is, in fact, a mindless romp that puts a pile of undead on your screen – numerous on-screen characters is clearly the 360’s big trick - and lets you whack them to pieces with a baseball bat. Classy.

Gun – A pleasant change of scenery – Wild West – heralds a decent looking tale of stagecoaches and cowboys. Still seems to be about shooting things though.

Saints Row – sadly not the Southampton FC 360 game that must surely come soon, this is, in fact, a GTA clone, with gangs and stuff. Dull.

The Outfit – A fairly mindless WW2 blaster which, by focussing on the third person, at least differentiates itself from the first person shooter morass. Reminded me a lot of Activision's Mercenaries - ie lots of destruction and not much deliberation. These are traits of most of the launch games.

Dead or Alive 4 – Yes, it looks lovely, but c’mon guys, do we really need beat-em-up games in 2005? 15 year-old boys will enjoy the protagonists lack of clothing.

FIFA: Road to World Cup – The FIFA game for 360 is national teams only and plays a solid game. The Pro Evo controls, that are standard, help, and there is a nice realistic pace to the game. The player likenesses were impressive – no more zombies – although there is still a discernable delay between pressing the pad and the on-screen action.

hopefully the other big name games will fair better

I can't wait to play them all. I'm an easy man to please.
I'm not. There are very few reasons for me to get a 360 and most of those will be coming to the PC anways.

Castle Wolfenstein is also in development :p

He didn't play any of the more impressive looking launch titles.

The first batch of games for any generation usually offers improved visuals and little else - it was certainly the case with the PS2. The only console to totally blow me away at launch was the N64, with Mario 64.

Once the developers get the hang of the hardware we should start to see some very special games. Something worth noting - by the time the PS3 comes out, with it's first batch of 'ok' looking luanch titles, the 360 should be reasonably established, and have some promising games that make better use of the machines capabilities on the way.

Anyways, the 360's line-up is pretty decent imo - Kameo and PD0 look like good fun, and Oblivion should be the dogs bollox :)

You missed some of the others...

Perfect Dark Zero – Initially ever so slightly underwhelming, especially the multiplayer. But the singleplayer level, basically a sniper section set across some rooftops, does look lovely. The lighting and the tactile textures – paint peeling off metal, moisture on bricks etc – are a step up from the current generation of console graphics, but ultimately the gameplay still involves shooting things. I’ll get a longer go tomorrow, but my suspicion is that Perfect Dark will not be the Halo-esque success that Microsoft are hoping for.

Kameo – This fantasy adventure is stunning to look at – a real step forward. Unfortunately a truncated go on the game didn’t reveal much other than a character that can change shape – remember Zelda Majora’s Mask? – depending on the situation. More on this tomorrow.

Project Gotham 3 – Couldn’t get near this one – which bodes well, I guess. Graphically it did seem slightly underwhelming though. After all the hi-def hype it is hard to shake the feeling that a fairly decent PC wouldn’t have a problem pumping out the graphics on display, albeit costing a lot more than £279. Anyway, I’ll grab a go on this tomorrow.

Other initial standouts included the excellent looking Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Ubisoft’s very promising King Kong. More tomorrow…

And another thing, why are you taking someone's opinion off of short demos that are only supposed to show the hardware? Of course its all style, no substance, its a freakin game preview show. God, you people act like the Half Life 2 trailers showed substance up the wazoo.

Well, they did TBH. Although the first media release turned out to be a pack of lies.

They definetly had style, but the substance was only clear in the game...in small doses.

I think the demonstration of AI, physics, and narration goes a ways of displaying substance.

The next generation in general is very underwhelming, especially the 360. I'm sorry but PC's have been using the same techniques that these consoles pretend to be introducing for the last couple years. They're just pumping more polygons and more of the same effects out than we currently can. I haven't seen ANY game that's really doing anything remotely original with the new hardware besides the Revolution. And with the 360, in addition to not being very original there's only a marginal graphical leap from the current gen.

I'll probably get a PS3 for games like MGS4, maybe a Revolution because they're the only ones actually doing something remotely original, but this generation is a complete disappointment.

I agree with the PS3, but the revolution? It's the first console EVER to really change the outdated controller design. I'm not sure it's the right step, but it's something different, which is all I need in these days of sequels and rip-offs.

Some you guys can write off this generation before it's started if you like, the rest of us can enjoy the many, many exclusive titles that will never appear on the pc.

I shall leave you in your insular and teeny tiny world of pc gaming now, enjoy ;)

Although they're not 360 games, RE5 and MGS4 has all the depth and substance i need:sniper:

We're the minority here :(.

The only reason why I never got into the current gen consoles and these next gen consoles because both upgraded nothing but graphics(minus the revolution).
I watched a video of prg3. I liked the graphics but this was just actual gameplay footage not a trailer and it seemed like...any other racing game I have ever seen in my life.
There has been no real gameplay enhancments From the 64/ps -> Ps2/Gc/X -> Ps3/Xbox360

None, at least with the Pc I can feel the innovation of physics and things like that sooner. When I look at a game, I want something that isn't just new, or just "fun". Hey I like fun things but... if I buy xbox 360...what innovative games..what games will leave me with the feeling when I first played goldeneye..my first FPS, or even Super mario 64...my first 3d game. To me that was just amazing. Because 3D was new, and added a new depth. Goldeneye was something new for me to. FPS's have stayed the same since i played Goldeneye. "Run, Shoot!, Cover, Run, Shoot!, Cover!". Why can't I start to do that then all of the sudden the most unexpected thing happens and it just leaves me in.....amaze?
Look, how far have FPS's changed? Minus graphics and lighting and all that If I went and played doom how much would have changed if I then went and played a diffrent FPS like Doom 3 or Halo? Basics of it all...***n...shoot...figure out what weapon works best..cover...etc....

Which is why I like the Revolutiion...I can guide the sword in realtime with my hand and that to me is something that offers a new level of control and is the only big innovation I have seen in a long time.

It's just not xbox 360 games. The majority of games coming out these days are underwhelming.

You're just playing the wrong games then.

Video gaming is great these days, the choice of quality titles more than ever before.

The bugger is that the very best games are spread over nearly every format, meaning that to experience the best games you need a decent pc and at least a few consoles - which is expensive.

Some of my favourite games in recent months have been on the DS, the ones i'm most anticipating over christmas are appearing on the PS2 and 360. The new Zelda should be out quite soon on the GC and something is bound to come out on the pc soon that will blow us all away.

I am talking PC titles. I stay away from the consoles.

I'm very impressed with the 360. There was no mention of Kameo? That looks like a fantastic game. Perfect Dark Zero isn't what I was expecting visually but it still looks like a ton of fun. The graphics look great but the style is different. It reminds me of Timesplitters. Thats not a bad thing either. Call of Duty 2 looks awesome as well. I'm also intrigued by Condemned. Looks freaky.

I'll be picking up a 360 at launch.

is underwhelming the new word for console-haters ? :O

Well then..what do you people expect?? You seem to expect something so spectacular that it will make you explode. Why are we arguing about this?? Where do developes have to go to impress you people?? Of course it's not going to be a major uprising in gameplay or anything else, but I see no point saying "oh I think this is underwheming" let me give you a tissue and go cry in a corner. It's gaming people, what were you expecting?? "The god of all systems to unleach itself among the emmesnly stoned public"? If this is not impressing you..a good time to stop gaming.

Ok launch titles? I thought alot had said MGS4 might be a luanch title for the ps3? If so its a way better quality game then anything the xbox360 has shown so far.

Why in the h*** would anyone want elder scrolls IV: Oblivion or call of duty 2 for the xbox360 if you have a nice pc. Most like the controls better on a pc for a fps, but oblivion is suppose to have tons more options and features on the pc (plus the ability to mod).

Which is the exact reason why I'm getting it for PC :D

you censored the word "hell"? hell, what the hell is wrong with the word hell?

Use to commenting on family friendly boards that are pretty strict lol.

hehe we're not that strict ...you can say words like "hell" and "ass" :O

Oh yes, a cutscene for the next installment in an overhyped series constitues quality.

Allow me to bow down before the PS3!

bah, pessimists be damned, no way im not gonna love dead rising, or get involved in elderscrolls, or enjoy halo 3 with friends, or getinto biwares upcoming rpg, or get some more of the great EA sports line,

basically, i dont care about this crap, its gonna be great, its gonna be pretty, and i think everyone who buys it will get their moneys worth. besides these are LAUNCH TITLES, and UNFINISHED ones at that.

maybe when we actually have some real information....

here's an impression of the 360 from the guy that runs Shacknews:

"So what was my overall impression of the Xbox 360? Pretty good really. With some games it is sort of obvious that they are rushing a bit for launch. It doesn't really seem to have an effect on gameplay, but graphics in most cases aren't overwhelming because programmers are just barely scratching the surface. The controller has a good feel to it, and the shoulder buttons are much handier than the old black & white ones. I wasn't entirely sure I would pick up a 360 at launch or not before, but I will now, probably buying Project Gotham Racing 3, NBA Live 06 and Perfect Dark Zero along with it. December 2, hurry up. "

I've got an Xbox360 on pre-order for 2nd december, i dont really know what games are coming out on it, i only decided yesterday that i want one for my 21st birthday of my girlfriend. I guess it'll be as bad as any other console for FPS, but then again, the PC is just as bad for any Racing game. I'm just a big kid, i've always gone into a paddy if i don't get something "new" on release like a console (except the nintendo's) :p
