Xbox Live Price Increase

I guess so, but I just really don't mind the idea of paying $4.17, and now $5 a month to play games on XBox Live. Steam does not host their own servers, the Wii's online system sucks cock, and I don't know what the PS3 does really. But, like, it kind of makes sense to have to pay for the system to me, and it seems I am literally the only one in this thread that thinks so.

Even though earlier on I agreed with you and basically literally sucked your cock about it?

You couldn't be more right.

To be fair a few people restricted their comments to mocking their marketing strategy. Which is objectively rather poor.

Lol'd heavily.

I like last FM and Sky Player on the Xbox, those 2 features for me are worth the £x extra they are going to charge.

I would pay for better online on the PS3. Kinda ruins it for me.

I don't know about Sky Player, but Last FM is its own service. Why the f*ck do you have to pay MS to use Last FM? Or Netflix?

That would be like me paying a monthly fee to Firefox to go to Pandora.com. It's ****ing absurd.

I take back what I said earlier. MS is worse than Apple when it comes to shit like this. Even the heavily censored, anti-competitive app store is better than this.

Just got the email from my old XBL account:

With an Xbox LIVE Gold membership, you can play blockbuster games such as Halo: Reach with your friends online, you can also stream movies from Netflix* and music from Last.fm right to your TV. You can even connect with friends near and far on Facebook® and Twitter™. Gold members also enjoy exclusive discounts and early access to game demos. And, this holiday, Xbox LIVE is adding new Gold features, including ESPN and Video Kinect, with Hulu Plus coming on Xbox Live in 2011.

Because you are a loyal member, we want to give you the opportunity to lock in your current price with an additional discount. Click here

or log on to Xbox LIVE from your console to review and take advantage of these limited-time offers.

Funny thing is that I haven't been a member for over a year. Anyway, good to know people are willing to pay for twitter, facebook, Hulu, ESPN, and Last.fm. Which are... you know... Free.

I find the whole XBL thing hilarious. The only service you are paying for is account management and maybe some dedicated servers. Everything else can be done without XBL but noooo can't have that. I find it incredibly hard to justify such things so I simply ignore the platform in it's entirety. Standard Microsoft bullshit. Oh and the best part they can disable the MP for games you've bought, ha!

Live subscriptions make MS a tidy profit, now they want more profit.

Impossible. First they'd have to realise console interfaces don't work on the PC.

$5 a month isn't asking for too much though. that gives you access to all the free demos (AND all arcade demos) without waiting once a week like on the PSN, free tv shows here and there, and of course a more secure and easy way to game. XBL is still years beyond PSN simply with the amount of fun and available working games. PSN maybe free but who the hell plays on that anymore?? must i also add that PSN's updates are slow as shit and their download speeds seem like utter crap on my console

I like how you say that you get all that free stuff for $5/mo

What value!

Also, in what way does a pay-service like XBLive offer a "more secure and easy way to game?"

well for starters the easy part is from actual content that gets a steady flow. as for secure i have yet to meet a person saying their account got hacked

I bet he posted about it on Twitter with XBL.

I doubt it, GFWL has engendered so much hatred from the PC gaming community that I could easily see it not being around in a year. I'm not even sure any upcoming AAA titles will even be using it, all of them have moved to Steamworks or their own platforms.

Most notably THQ who shit canned GFWL for their upcoming game Space Marine, I guess seeing Dawn of War 2 be ruined by GFWL and their awful certification system changed some minds over at THQ and Relic.

Good riddance.

On one hand, now that I think about it, re-introducing a gold subscription wouldn't be a smart idea. I know the only people who actually favor a return of a Gold Subscription for GFWL are the diehard GFWL Fan(atic)s, arguing that a return of a gold subscription would improve the service. Though it wouldn't affect me since I only play Singleplayer, I know a return would chase away many of what few followers of GFWL they have left.

Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah, woah..woah...woah.......woah...

Lois this is NOT my Batman glass.

Dont bring Apple into this!

I still dont see the benefits of Live other than the ability to play online. All the social things are covered just as well on PSN. I literally cant think of anything Live has that PSN doesnt.

And ***king Facebook doesnt count, because who actually cares about Facebook?

Party chat.

Woo.

(Surprised they didn't just add Skype integration, heh.)

Dont bring Apple into this!

Why not? Just because Apple has left their customers absolutely nothing in terms of gaming doesn't mean they're not guilty of similar things.

News flash, their Macs actually CAN play games.

Surprisingly the parts inside their Macs are the same used in PC and laptops by other companies.

Thanks for pointing this out in such a politely non-offensive way. I am sure to bow to your viewpoint, now.

Is it just me or does Dynasty white knight for Apple a lot?

Well he has to justify the money he spent on their products somehow.

Well, they're the one's who started this "walled garden" trend in consumer electronics. Microsoft copied their basic model with the 360 (and they're doing it again with Windows Phone 7 btw). It's a fairly relevant point of comparison. But ****, even Apple doesn't charge customers to access otherwise free services (they just ban them :p ).

There really is no excuse whatsoever for charging customers to access services like Last.fm or Netflix. The "service" is nothing more than a toll booth between you and the internet - except MS doesn't even own the road they stuck the booth on.

Hell, they're already on very shaky ground trying to charge for online play. People managed to play games just fine online before Microsoft's "service" came around - and they still are on PS3 and PC.

I think Microsoft is trying to get every last dime they can before - what seems like Steam and PS3 are going to show Microsoft how it's done. You don't charge for the service, you charge for the ****ing games. The service should be free, and it's operated on the profits of you buying the games. And the service uses advertisements of said games to, well, sell even more games.

I don't know, I don't use Steam, but I heard it's pretty popular.

From before the PS3 was released, it was clear to me that Sony wanted to compete with Microsoft for market-share of - well, they wanted to reinvent the computer. Hard drives and web browsers, Blu Ray, etc. You get it? Sony doesn't make an OS, so they used Linux, right? Sony makes hardware and wants to sell hardware, and lots of it.

But ****, even Apple doesn't charge customers to access otherwise free services (they just ban them :p ).

They sure as **** made me pay for a mandatory ipod touch update. Two of them.

Just so I could use apps.

Well if you think about it from Microsoft's business point-of-view, an extra, what is it, £0.50 a month?;

Times that by the amount of Xbox Live Gold members and youve got a couple of extra million coming in each month.

Microsoft will have quotas, investors and the board to keep happy, so either they're failing to meet them at the moment as Windows isnt doing as well as they hoped, or they just want more. Probably the latter.

How many director of xbox live are out there. same reasoning behind blackberry or ipod hackers. it probably doesn't happen to joe schmoes out there just important people with nude pics of themselves and other high profile people.

No other service costs $60 a year and doesn't even protect a director of the service from getting hacked.
